Coventry started life as Singers F.C. and joined the Football League in 1919. The legendary Highfield Road Stadium was their home for 106 years (1899-2005), and in 2005 they moved to the 32,609 seater Ricoh Arena. However, the club and the owners SISU Capital became embroiled in a dispute over rent in 2012, and as a result the Sky Blues signed a three-year lease to share Northampton Town's Sixfields Stadium, which is 35 miles away.

The Midlands club are not adorned with silverware but they have won the FA Cup. In the 1987 final the Sky Blues faced off against a Tottenham side containing Ossie Ardiles, Glenn Hodle and Chris Waddle. Coventry went into the final resounding underdogs yet managed to prevail 3-2 in extra time, thanks to an own goal from Gary Mabbutt. Commentator John Motson said it was "the finest Cup Final I've had the pleasure of commentating on".
Another memorable moment for the side was reaching the second round of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (Europa League) in the 1970-1971 season. They actually beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the first leg before being heavily beaten in the away leg by the Bavarian giants. The Sky Blues also competed in the English top flight for 34 years before being relegated in 2001. At the time only Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton had enjoyed longer spells in the top flight.
Since relegation in 2001, they have had 11 different managers and 13 caretaker managers and in 2012 they were relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time since 1964.
There have been numerous well-known players who have turned out for Coventry. Goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic is a legend at the club after racking up 507 appearances for the side. Meanwhile, striker Dion Dublin also impressed in his four-year stint, scoring 61 goals in 145 games. Former manager Gary McAllister was one of the club's greatest players. The creative midfielder played 174 times for the club and scored a respectable 30 goals. Current Scotland manager Gordan Strachan managed and played for the club, as did Robbie Keane, whom the club sold for a record £13million to Inter Milan in 2000.
Coventry contest the M69 derby with Leicester. The name comes from the M69 motorway that connects the two cities. In all, there have been 86 meetings; Leicester have won 35 of them and Coventry 23. The clash has been temporarily put on hold as Coventry are competing in the league beneath Leicester.
