Solid start for Toffees but United defence a concern
Everton have made an encouraging start to the new Premier League season, picking up four points from their opening two games and progressing to the third round of the EFL Cup with a comfortable 4-0 victory at Preston.
David Moyes' side beat Crystal Palace on the opening weekend before securing a draw at Bournemouth thanks to a late equaliser, but their positive start was followed by a frustrating transfer deadline day.
The Toffees allowed striker Beto to leave without having a replacement secured, and then a move for Folarin Balogun ultimately collapsed, leaving Thierno Barry as the club's only recognised senior striker. They also lost one of their most exciting players, Iliman Ndiaye, to Manchester City for £60m, although they did bring the ever-popular Jack Grealish back for a second loan spell.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have had a more mixed start. They surprisingly lost 2-0 at newly-promoted Hull before responding with a 5-2 victory over another newly-promoted club, Ipswich.
Although that result came with a few fortunate moments, including a defensive blunder that gifted United an equaliser and a controversial second goal (though ultimately correct according to the laws of the game), it's hard to say United didn't deserve the win given they registered a very impressive 33 shots (11 on target) and scored five goals, including a hat-trick from star man Bruno Fernandes.
The big concern is that United again conceded twice, and following a quiet transfer deadline day, manager Michael Carrick will have to cope with the same group of defensive players until at least January.
I'm a little surprised that both teams aren't a little closer together in the Match Odds market on the Betfair Sportsbook.
Everton have made a solid start to the season, won their only home game without conceding, and yet they're as big as 12/53.40 to win here against a United team that lost in a whimper at newly-promoted Hull in their only away game this term.
United can be backed at 11/102.11 to win the game with the Draw priced up at 13/53.60, but I'm just wondering whether the market has over overreacted to Everton's poor transfer deadline day.
True, the Toffees have lost a great player in Ndiaye, but Grealish is a good replacement and knows the club well after his loan spell last season, and the problems Everton might have in attack are surely further down the line. Right now, Barry is fit, and in form after scoring four goals in just three starts this term.
So assuming Grealish comes in for Ndiaye, then Everton will be as strong as they've been at any point in the early part of the season.
In a nutshell then, I wouldn't put anyone off chancing the home win at 12/53.40, but given United won this game 1-0 last season (admittedly, they were in great form at the time and Everton were struggling at home) then I'm going to be a bit more reserved and back the Everton/Draw option in a Bet Builder.
It's available to back at 4/61.67 in the Double Chance market if you want to back it as a single, or head over to the Betfair Exchange for a slightly better price, as you can see in the real time market below.
English Premier League: Everton v Man Utd (Double Chance)
Sunday 6 September, 2.00pm
Incredibly, in United's two Premier League games this season they've registered 54 shots (21 v Hull, 33 v Ipswich), scored five goals and conceded four. And although those two games were against newly-promoted clubs it does suggest that games involving Carrick's men are going to be entertaining affairs this season.
Everton registered 16 shots at home to Palace and they had 13 at Bournemouth last weekend, so this game has the potential to be entertaining also, and we could see plenty of shots which of course could lead to goals
The market fancies at least three goals with Over 2.5 priced up at 4/61.67, and that's a price I'm happy to include with the Everton/Draw double chance bet, with the double paying out at 2/13.00.
Back (2pt) Everton/Draw (Double Chance) and Over 2.5 Goals
I'd be a bit annoyed if a bet that contains some obvious selections landed without me having a bet on it, so I'll give it a go. You might want to wait for teams now first however to see if Jack Grealish starts, but if he does then we can guarantee he'll be fouled, well, almost guarantee.
In 20 appearances for Everton last season Grealish was fouled 58 times, so when you consider some of those appearances were from the bench or he didn't finish the match, then he basically gets fouled on average three times every game. We'll back him to be fouled two or more times on Sunday.
Then we come to Bruno Fernandes. Not only does he have a stunning goals/assist record since Carrick took over, he also has a brilliant record against the Toffees, registering 11 goal involvements in 13 matches against them. He's our second 'obvious' bet.
And finally, we'll add 30+ Match Shots to a Bet Builder that pays out just north of 7/24.50. Both of United's games have busted this number with Carrick's men registering 33 shots on their own last week. In what I expect to be a close, but entertaining affair, I'm expecting plenty of shots.
Back (1pt) Grealish to be Fouled 2+ times, Fernandes Goal or Assist and 30+ Match Shots
