Venus Williams

Born on June 17th, 1980, in Florida, Venus Williams is an American professional tennis player who is a former World No. 1 and has won seven Grand Slam titles. Venus is the older sister of current world number one, Serena Williams, and they are widely regarded as two of the women's game's best ever players.

As well as her seven Grand Slam singles titles, Venus has 13 Grand Slam doubles titles to her name. Venus's five Wimbledon singles titles have seen her tagged as one of the best grass court players of her generation.

Under the guidance of her determined father, Richard Williams, Venus won her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 2000, going on to win the US Open later that year. After defending her two Grand Slam crowns in 2001, Venus climbed to the top of the WTA rankings for the first time on February 25, 2002, becoming the first black woman to achieve this feat during the Open Era.

Going on to win another three Wimbledon titles to take her total to seven Grand Slam singles titles, Williams is currently twelfth on the all time list of women's winners, the second highest of any other active female player except for her younger sister Serena. Her 22 overall Grand Slam titles consist of seven in singles, thirteen in women's doubles, and two mixed doubles titles.

With five Wimbledon singles titles, Williams is tied with two other women for eighth place on the all-time list, one of only four women in the open era to have won five or more singles titles at the All England club. Venus is one of only five women in the modern game to have won 200 or more main draw Grand Slam singles matches.

As well as her Grand Slam successes, Venus has also won four Olympic gold medals during her career, one in singles and three in women's doubles. She and her sister Serena have won more Olympic gold medals than any other female tennis players. In 2000 at the Sydney Olympics, Williams became only the second player to win Olympic gold medals in both singles and doubles at the same Olympic Games, matching Helen Wills Moody's unique feat from 1924.

With 44 career singles titles during a stellar career, Venus is the second most successful player still active on the WTA Tour. Her 35-match winning streak from the 2000 Wimbledon Championships to the 2000 Generali Ladies Linz tournament final is the longest winning streak since January 1, 2000. She is also one of only three active WTA players to have made the finals of all four Grand Slams, alongside sister Serena and Russian Maria Sharapova.
