Based in Hertfordshire, England, Watford Football Club has been a part of the Football League since 1920, 39 years after the club's formation date. Founded in 1881 as Watford Rovers, the club entered their first FA Cup in 1886 and became part of the Southern League a decade later. After finishing the 1914-1915 season as champions of the Southern League, Watford made the step up into the Football League in 1920.
After spending time playing at a number of home grounds, the club made the permanent move to Vicarage Road in 1922. The club still call that ground home today. Spending much of the last century playing in the lower leagues of English football, Graham Taylor, who of course went on to manage England, led 'The Hornets' through one of the most successful periods in the club's entire history.

During Taylor's 11-year tenure, Watford rose from the Fourth Division to the First Division, also reaching an FA Cup final. After leading the club to three promotions in four seasons, Taylor's highlight came in the 1982/1983 season, when they finished second in the First Division just five years after playing in the Fourth Division. An appearance in the UEFA Cup the following season was Watford's reward for their league finish, going on to reach the 1984 FA Cup Final the same season.
Taylor's departure from the club in order to take charge of Aston Villa was followed by a huge decline in the club's fortunes between 1987 and 1997. He then returned as full-time manager, leading the team to sensational back-to-back promotions from the Second Division to the Premier League.
The club's most recent stint in the top flight of English football came during the 2006-2007 season, when manager Aidy Boothroyd led the club through a tough season that ended up with relegation back to the Championship.
The club are currently owned by the Pozzo family, whose footballing empire also consists of Serie A club Udinese and Granada CF in Spain's La Liga. The Italian family aren't the first colourful owners Watford have had, with Sir Elton John twice owner of the club during Taylor's time as manager before stepping down as chairman in 2002.
Former Italy and Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola has been tasked with leading the club back into the Premier League, and the popular Italian has certainly given Watford fans genuine belief that a return to the big time could soon be coming, but when he resigned in December 2013, the locals were disappointed.
