7/101.70 Alonso for next Liverpool manager
-
Bayern want him to replace Tuchel
-
Spaniard may have to choose between old clubs
Xabi Alonso is still the odds-on favourite to be the next Liverpool manager even though Bayern Munich are likely to try to persuade the Spaniard to become their next boss.
The German champions are on the lookout for a successor to Thomas Tuchel who, they announced today, will leave the club in the summer. That follows three consecutive defeats - two in the Bundesliga and in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie against Lazio.
Alonso 7/101.70 for Reds but Bayern want Spaniard
Alonso is 7/101.70 to return to Liverpool, where he played from 2004 to 2009, when Jurgen Klopp leaves in the summer. He has been favourite for the Liverpool job since the Klopp stunned fans by announcing his departure. But the news from Munich will put Anfield on red alert.
Will they have to move sooner than expected if they want to appoint their former-midfielder? Could Alonso be tempted to join Bayern instead? He played for them for three years, ending his playing career there in 2017.
He has been manager of Bayer Leverkusen since 2022. It is his first job in management so he may be more comfortable with a step up in the Bundesliga instead of making the move to Premier League management so early in his career.

His Leverkusen side are eight points clear of Bayern in the German top flight and 1.192/11 to be champions. If Bayern were able to recruit him it would blow wide open the next Liverpool manager betting.
The speculation about who will take up which roles in the summer is not ideal when there is so much football still to be played this season.

Liverpool are top of the Premier League and 3.185/40 on the Betfair Exchange to win the title ahead of tonight's match against Luton.
What's next for Tuchel?
First up for Tuchel will be trying to salvage something from his final season with Bayern.
They are 1-0 down in their Champions League tie against Lazio but the Germans are still fourth favourites at 10.09/1 in the outright winner market on the Exchange.
Tuchel is unlikely to be out of work for long. He won the Bundesliga title with Bayern in dramatic style last season and steered Chelsea to unexpected Champions League glory in 2021. He also took PSG to the final the previous season.
He is 15/28.50 to become Barcelona's next manager when Xavi leaves this summer. The board at the Catalan club may take note of the way he quickly transformed Chelsea from chaotic underachievers to a lean winning machine.
That said, his compatriot Hansi Flick is 3/14.00 to rock up at Camp Nou in the home dugout next season.
Tuchel is 12/113.00 to become Liverpool's next manager but the market indicates that Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi 17/29.50 is more likely to get the job.
