Alan Shearer: Foden's red was stupid and DCL's England selection is no surprise

Foden was stupid to get sent off

It was stupid of Phil Foden to get sent off in the Manchester derby. Bruno Fernandes should have got the red as well because, even though his kick wasn't as strong, he did kick out as well.

If the ref was going to send one off, he should have sent them both off in my book. I hated Fernandes' reaction. He helped get Foden sent off. But Foden knows he shouldn't have done it. 

It is really not ideal for Foden, starting his season off with red card in the Manchester derby. He's going to have to sit on the sidelines again, unfortunately, and he'll be kicking himself, especially when the new manager had the belief in him to pick him for such a big game, so that's what will hurt. 

Calvert-Lewin is a real handful

Unlike Foden, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been picked by Thomas Tuchel for England's Nations League matches in September and October.

Harry Kane has got the lone striker spot for England, obviously, but Calvert-Lewin's motivation must be that if he carries on scoring the England manager won't be able to ignore him.

Calvert-Lewin is a proper handful on his day. It doesn't surprise me to see him in the England squad, especially with Ollie Watkins moving to Saudi Arabia.

Old Firm derby one of the biggest

What a brilliant weekend of football we have, with all the derbies on offer. Let's enjoy it because then we haven't got anything for three weeks other than international football.

I think there's a fascinating derby there in terms of Millwall v West Ham. What a game and what an atmosphere that will be. Wow.

The Newcastle v Sunderland derby is huge and great to be involved in when I was playing. I think one of the biggest, if not the biggest, is clearly Celtic v Rangers.

Rangers did them last weekend in the Scottish League Cup, like proper did them and Celtic will be reeling from that. I've been lucky enough to have been to a few Old Firm games, you talk about dislike and proper hatred, it is in that fixture unfortunately, and it is very different in my eyes to any other derby.

Derbies get the juices flowing

You get up for a derby as a player more than any other sort of game. There's a little bit more freedom given on the referees' side because they understand the situation or the atmosphere. Your juices flow a little bit more in the derbies for obvious reasons.

My last ever kick of a football was scoring a penalty against Sunderland. I never touched a ball again professionally after scoring that penalty, so it wasn't a bad way to go out. I don't know what would have happened if I'd have missed.

Well, I did miss one against them, didn't I? It was at St James' Park at the Gallowgate End and I'd waited all those years to get a penalty again and eventually I got one and it turned out to be my last ever touch of a football.

So, I was quite happy with that one. I had that for years and I'd waited for years to get another penalty against them.
