Cole Palmer is back in the England squad

Find out who's in Thomas Tuchel's first England squad since the World Cup for four upcoming Nations League fixtures...

Who's in Tuchel's England squad for the Nations League?

Thomas Tuchel recalled Cole Palmer to the England squad for September and October's Nations League ties.

England are 5/16.00 to win the UEFA tournament, which will be conducted across six group stage games this autumn, followed by knockout rounds in March and the final next summer.

Palmer was left out of this summer's World Cup squad but, after an impressive start to the Premier League season for Chelsea, he's back and could play in the games against Spain (26/9), Czechia (29/9), Croatia (3/10) and (Czechia 6/10).

Alex Scott, who started the season well in midfield for Bournemouth, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who's scored four goals for Leeds in the Premier League so far this term, are also in the squad.

There is a first call-up for Liverpool's 18-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha who arrives to boost England's options up front.

Who isn't in the England squad?

As ever, there is as much talk about who is not in the England squad as there is about who did make the cut.

Phil Foden, who like Palmer missed out on the World Cup and was hoping for a recall, was left out, as was Harry Maguire.

Four players who did go to the World Cup - Noni Madueke, Ollie Watkins, Reece James and Djed Spence - were also left out.

Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, who must be wondering what he has to do to endear himself to Tuchel, will also have a quiet few weeks after being overlooked again.

Tuchel has point to prove after World Cup disappointment

In the build-up to today's squad annoucement, Tuchel talked about the "scar" of England's World Cup defeat to Argentina.

It was a familiar story, England going 1-0 up in a crucial game, then trying to sit on their lead and getting dumped out by opponents who were braver and more willing to do whatever was necessary to win.

It was also exactly the kind of situation in which Tuchel was expected to thrive as England manager. But he choked and now he needs to make amends. That mission will start with this month's Nations League fixtures, which begin against the world champions, and continue in England's qualification campaign for Euro 2028 which they will cohost.

It's a long way off but, after finishing as runners up at the last two European Championships, only winning the 2028 tournament will do for England and the road starts here.

They are 9/25.50 on the Betfair Sportsbook.
