India regroup for 6th ODI v Australia - a betting bonanza

1 October 2007 | About Editor |

India will be looking to upset the odds and reclaim some lost pride after Australia's landslide victory in Vadodara put the tourists 3-1 up with two to play.

For those betting on the outcome of the seven-game series, the opening match washout shrunk the odds on a tie, but Australia's form has since put them in the driving seat.

Andrew Symonds and Bradley Haddin were the stars of Australia's 84-run victory in Kochi and, despite Yuvraj Singh's century, they were not the team to bet against in Hyderabad - taking a 2-0 lead.

India hit back in Chandigarh to keep betting on a home victory interesting, but crumbled in Vadodara and were skittled out for 148 with more than 10 overs left.

All bets were settled when Australia cruised to a nine-wicket win with Adam Gilchrist the star.

The odds on an Australian victory tumbled as the vice-captain smashed an unbeaten 79, with three sixes in one over, to ease his side home in just under 26 overs.

The teams now travel to Nagpur for Sunday's 6th ODI where conditions are expected to be at odds with India - suiting Australia's aggressive batting and fast seam-up bowling.

Australian paceman Mitchell Johnson was the destroyer in Vadodara, taking 5-26, and you can bet he will be a key man again if the Nagpur pitch is anything like it was when the two sides met there in 2004.

A green top meant spin played little part in that Test, and the betting is that India's batsmen won't welcome a repeat of the bounce produced three years ago.

For those betting on the top Indian run scorer, Sachin Tendulkhar has found form in the last two matches to top score each time with knocks of 79 and 47.

Betting on the top Australian run scorer should see interest in Matthew Hayden who appears to be in great form for the tourists.

The Queenslander's scores of 60, 75 and 92 in three consecutive innings could also make him an interesting bet for the most consistent Aussie series batsman.

India may recall paceman Sreesanth to replace spinner Murali Kartik in Nagpur if the pitch has a bit of grass on it.

The fiery fast bowler drew widespread criticism for his aggressive demeanour and excessive wicket celebrations earlier in the series and missed the last two matches.
