In the 14:40 at Beverley, Sire New Bay has a 28.1% strike rate with his first time out offspring, and today sees Bally Spirit 5.04/1 take to the track for the first time.
Buick makes a rare trip to Hamilton
Jockey William Buick makes a rare trip to Hamilton today for six rides. The jockey has had nine rides at this venue and none since 2012. He has scored with two of those nine, placed second, and third three times, so what has got him on this long journey today?
His afternoon starts with Explicit 2.89/5 for Mark and Charlie Johnston in the 14:20, but it's hard to envisage it's this one he has made the trip for despite being the favourite.
Inver Park 2.01/1 14:50 has been well supported this morning, and Buick rides for George Boughey, for which he has a 21% strike rate. Quotes suggest they are trying to get this one into the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot - for which he will need a further hike in the ratings.
In the 15:20, Clansman 5.59/2 looks to have been a spare ride to pick up while he is here. It's hard to think he has made the trip for an exposed Class 5 handicapper. Similar comments apply to Lucinda Russell's Engles Rock 6.05/1 15:50 and Class 6 runner Shine On Brendan 2.111/10 16:25.
In the 16:55, Buick has his second ride for George Boughey on handicap debutant Simply Soundheim 1.910/11. Boughey is only 12% with his handicap debutants, but he has a 25% strike rate with first time gelded runners.
Buick certainly seems to be here for the two George Boughey runners, and the Sportsbook double pays 3.814/5
Trainer Phillip Makin has a 22% strike rate when returning his horses to the track within seven days and saddles Big Dutchie 67.066/1 in the 17:20 at Beverley.
Trainer Nigel Tinkler has a 21.1% strike rate with last time out winners and today saddles High Security 3.55/2 in the 18:25 at Ripon.
In the 18:55 at Ripon, Tamarama 1.910/11 looks a good deal ahead of the handicapper off this mark of 79 and should take some stopping. In the W/O market, La Feile returns to 1m, which should see further improvement from the Richard Fahey filly.
Today, William Haggas has two three-year-old runners at Ripon: Punda Maria 4.57/2 19:25 and Persist 3.7511/4 20:00. The trainer has a 39% strike rate with this age group at this venue although the latter looks like a sprinter.
In the 20:10 at Warwick, trainer Ben Pauling is just one for 23 in bumpers at Warwick and saddles favourite Glorious Oscar 2.111/10. Suzi Best saddles Forlano 4.03/1 and is four for 17 in Bumpers. Daryl Jacob is booked, and he has finished first and second from three rides in NH bumper races for the yard.

Horses for courses
This section highlights the best bets from horses that have won twice or more at today's tracks.
13:50 Hamilton - Quanah - Has won here three times (27%)
16:15 Beverley - Tangled - Has won here twice (40%)
18:25 Ripon - Van Gerwen - Has won here (25%)
Weighted to go well
"Weighted to go well" highlights horses running that are more than 10lbs below their last winning handicap mark.
14:10 Beverley - Dirchill - Has won off 60 runs off 48
16:15 Beverley - Poet's Dawn - Has won off 83 runs off 70
18:25 Ripon - Young Tiger - Has won off 70 runs off 56
Furthest traveller
Today's furthest traveller is trainer Adam West who has made the 410-mile journey to Hamilton with two runners today. He saddles Couldn't Could She 10.09/1 16:25 and James Jude 41.040/1 16:55. The trainer is 2-4 50% at this course, but it's hard to see where the improvement for both of his runners will come from?
Race of the day
We head to Hamilton for our feature race, the 15:20 Handicap (Class 5) in which a field of seven head to post after the withdrawal of Sameem last night.
Where's Jeff was disappointing after receiving market support over the course and distance last time, and there looked to be very few excuses for that effort. This is a lesser assignment on paper and a drop-in class, and with a claimer on board, he is effectively nine pounds lower.
He often runs well here, and a repeat of any of his efforts from last season at this venue will be enough for him to score today.
He could be worth forgiving, but the suspicion is that he is on the downgrade.
The New Marwan saw market support at Musselburgh but was caught flat-footed around the bend only to stick on well at the finish. He bumped into an upwardly mobile four-year-old who had previously shown a liking for the course and that had dictated the race from the outset, so it's wise to upgrade that effort.
He arrives here unexposed, and his latest run was his first on turf since August 21 and second since 2019. He looks like a thorough stayer and has more to offer.
Doubts are starting to surround Arrange's attitude after having every chance to win her race at Wetherby last time but looked as though she doesn't want to go through with it. She will have to be delivered extremely late, but it may be no coincidence she has finished runner-up the last five times. Caution is advised.
Big race verdict
Ready preference is for The New Marwan, who has an upwardly mobile profile and is unexposed over staying distances and was far better than the bare result returned to turf last time. This more conventional track should see him to good effect, and he is the only horse arriving on an upward curve in this contest. Where's Jeff is naturally feared should he bounce back to form and is the second choice.
Final Word - Where's the Irish firepower?
The Derby field consists of eight Irish entered horses, and five of those are in the top six of the betting. The Irish have won this race seven of the last ten years, but despite only having one in the top six of the market, the British can be extremely hopeful that the trophy remains on these shores.
Desert Crown looks the leading hope for the British contingent this year after his excellent Dante victory on return. Still, the lack of depth in Ireland should give his connections every confidence one of the British runners can score here.
There's been little firepower out of Ireland this term. In the English 2,000 Guineas, Luxembourg, who has suffered injury since, did the best of the Irish raiders. Tenth place was their best effort outside of this one.
Native Trail underperformed in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, yet brushed aside 40/1 chance New Energy and burst the bubble of Derby hope Buckaroo. In turn, it knocked the form of Piz Badile as another English runner, Imperial Fighter, filled the third spot.
Natural World did no favours for the form of United Nations at Goodwood, while Changingofthegaurd's Chester form has worked out poorly.
Star of India could prove to be the current value in the race from that side of the Irish Sea from a form perspective, but this is not a strong year for this Irish after being dominated in the Classic contests so far. And the Oaks doesn't look as though it will be much better for them at this stage.
Until tomorrow, be lucky
