The Spain national football team are the number one ranked side in the world in the FIFA standings. They have won the World Cup once and the European Championship on three occasions. Amazingly, those four tournament wins came consecutively.

The national team are controlled by the Royal Spanish Football Federation, which is the governing body for football in Spain.
In 1904 Spain, also referred to as La Roja (The Red One), became members of FIFA. They weren't fully established, though, until 1909. Their debut came in 1920 at the Summer Olympics against Denmark in Belgium. A Patricio Arabolaza goal gave them a 1-0 victory.
Their biggest win in their history to date came in 1933 when they defeated Bulgaria 13-0 in Madrid. That is yet to be bettered.
Spain entered the World Cup for the first time a year later, the tournament held that year in Italy. The European nation was able to progress into the quarter-finals after a win over Brazil in the opening round. They were eliminated by the hosts in a replay following a 1-1 draw in the last eight tie.
La Roja were able to win their maiden major tournament on home soil in 1964. They lifted the European Nations' Cup, now known as the European Championship. Wins over Romania, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Hungary saw them reach the final. They then came up against the Soviet Union, whom they beat 2-1 to lift the trophy.
A second European Championship arrived in 2008 in the competition held in Austria and Switzerland. They managed to win all three of their group games to qualify for the quarter-finals. Spain were then taken to penalties by Italy after a goalless draw following 120 minutes. They won that shootout 4-2. A comfortable 3-0 victory over Russia saw them reach the final, before beating Germany 1-0 for the trophy.
Two years later they secured the World Cup for the first time in their history. The tournament was held in South Africa. They only just made it through from their group thanks to a 2-1 win over Chile in their final game. In the knockout stages, they then got past Portugal, Paraguay, Germany and the Netherlands to lift the trophy.
Spain's third straight major tournament win came in Euro 2012 which was jointly hosted by Ukraine and Poland. They continued their impressive run by beating Italy in the final 4-0 at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev.
