Paris Saint-Germain, or PSG, is a French football club based in Paris, currently competing in Ligue 1. Only formed in 1970 following the merger of Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain, PSG can now rightly class themselves as one of European football's biggest clubs. The Parc des Princes has been the club's home since 1974, with a capacity of just under 49,000.

Following the founding of the club, PSG joined Ligue 1 in 1974, winning three league titles in that time, as well as one Ligue 2, 8 Coupe de France titles, 3 Coupe de la Ligue, 3 Trophée des Champions, 1 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and 1 UEFA Intertoto Cup title.
With 20 major titles to their name, Paris Saint-Germain are the fourth most successful club in French football history, and one of only two French clubs alongside Olympique de Marseille to win a major European club title following the club's 1996 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup triumph.
Despite no geographical ties, PSG share an intense rivalry with Olympique de Marseille, in a rivalry that is based more on the cultural differences between the north and south of the country. The matches between the two clubs are known as Le Classique, and are right up there with many of world football's fiercest local derbies. PSG are the second best-supported football club in France behind bitter rivals Marseille, although it has been the Parisians who have been the dominant force in France over recent years.
Qatar Investment Authority bought a majority stake in 2011 and became the sole shareholder in 2012. The takeover instantly made PSG the richest club in France and one of the richest in the world, allowing the club to shell out huge transfer fees in order to bring the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović, Edinson Cavani, Javier Pastore, Lucas and Marquinhos to Paris, helping the club assemble one of the best squads in world football.
The appointment of Carlo Ancelotti in 2011 was followed by PSG winning the Ligue 1 title in 2013 for the first time since 1994, with Ibrahimović's 30 league goals helping the club to the championship title. While Ancelotti left for Real Madrid soon after leading the Parisians to the Ligue 1 title, former France captain Laurent Blanc was appointed as the Italian's replacement, tasked with building on their domestic form and establishing the club as a genuine European power.
