Kevin Hatchard's best bets for West Ham v Leeds United
Can West Ham survive by beating Leeds and hoping for a Tottenham defeat?

To avoid relegation West Ham must beat Leeds United and hope that Spurs lose to Everton. Kevin Hatchard believes it's the end of the Premier League road for Nuno's team.

Hammers are staring into the abyss

It still pains West Ham fans of a certain vintage that they are the only Premier League team in history to have been relegated with 42 points on the board (I had lunch with a Hammers-supporting friend this week, and it was the first thing he mentioned.) Even if the Irons had won their final game at Birmingham in May 2003, they still would have been relegated via goal difference.

There is a possibility this Sunday that the Hammers will end the season on 39 points and still go down. They must win and Tottenham must lose - that is the only path to safety.

Nuno's men have chosen the most inopportune time to have their worst run of 2026. They hit the woodwork three times and were denied a clear penalty in a 3-0 defeat at Brentford, and they felt they were on the wrong end of a controversial VAR decision in a 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal.

If the cruel finger of fate jabbed them in the eye in both of those games, they couldn't say that about the dismal display in the 3-1 defeat at Newcastle.

In a game West Ham probably needed to win, Nuno inexplicably dropped his best striker Taty Castellanos to the bench and selected three centre-backs. After a hapless 25-minute spell in which the Hammers had leaked two goals, the Portuguese tactician realised the error of his ways, hooking the bemused Jean-Clair Todibo and restoring Castellanos to the team. As further substitutions destabilised the team even more, Nuno stared into the middle-distance, crushing reality settling on his shoulders.

Catellanos will surely return to the starting XI here, with Todibo likely to make way. Pablo could replace Callum Wilson in the forward line.

Defiant Leeds will be no pushovers

What a season it has been for Leeds United and their coach Daniel Farke. The affable German seemed to be sliding towards the exit door in late November, but during a 3-2 defeat at Manchester City, a mid-game tactical switch to a back three changed everything.

Leeds adopted the formation from then on and lost just four of the next 24 Premier League matches. Farke has proven he can coach at this level, and Leeds have shown what a smart and consistent approach in the transfer market can achieve.

Leeds added brawn and height to their squad in all areas, and it has worked a treat. The Whites have lost just 12 times in the top division this term, the lowest number of defeats in the bottom half. They have only conceded one more goal than Liverpool, and the same number as sixth-placed Bournemouth.

If anyone thinks Leeds are heading for the beach early, they need to study the last two performances. They were outstanding in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham, playing as if they were fighting for their lives in the bottom three. They then dealt Brighton's Champions League hopes a hefty blow, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a last-gasp winner in a 1-0 success.

It's also worth remembering that Leeds reached the FA Cup semi-finals, and it feels like this is a squad that can really kick on with some smart additions. It's not all about physical strength either, with more diminutive players like Brenden Aaronson and Gabriel Gudmundsson playing their part.

Hammers are far too short to secure vital win

Motivation is doing way too much heavy lifting in the Match Odds market here, with West Ham 1.910/11 on the Exchange to win the game. The Hammers have lost three in a row, they have won just three of their last 13 competitive matches, and Leeds dumped them out of the FA Cup at the London Stadium as recently as last month.

Are we truly to believe that West Ham will win the game just because they need to? What happens if Spurs race into an early lead against Everton, crushing West Ham's hopes? The atmosphere could quickly turn toxic, and I just can't see Leeds letting up if they didn't against Spurs or Brighton.

I'll lay West Ham at 1.910/11.

Fouls the key to 5/16.00 Bet Builder

I'll put together a four-fold here on the Bet Builder that pays out at just over 5/16.00, a combined price of 6.17517/100 in decimals . We'll start by giving Leeds a two-goal start on the Handicap. Farke's men have lost by a multiple-goal margin just four times in the Premier League this season, and two of those matches were against newly-crowned champions Arsenal.

I'll back West Ham and former Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville to be fouled at least twice. The Dutchman has been fouled at least twice in 14 of his last 20 competitive starts, and across his last four starts he's been fouled a staggering 15 times.

Let's go for the fiery Taty Castellanos to be shown a card. The Argentine forward has been booked in four of his last six games, and he's picked up seven cautions since signing in January. He'll be fired up after his demotion last week, and he's the kind of player who'll put everything on the line on Sunday.

On that same basis I'll back Castellanos to have three or more foul involvements. In 65 minutes against Newcastle he committed four fouls. He committed three in the FA Cup game against Leeds. He's had three foul involvements or more in eight of his 17 Premier League games.
