While Lyon won three Coupe de France trophies in 1964, 1967, and 1973, as well three Ligue 2 titles in 1950-1951, 1953-1954, and 1988-1989, the club really established themselves as a force at the start of the 21st century. The club won their first ever Ligue 1 championship in 2002, going on to win a record seven successive league titles between 2002 and 2008, including two more Coupe de France titles to take their total to a record five. Lyon have also won a record seven Trophée des Champions.

Historically, Lyon's main rivalry has been with fellow Ligue 1 club Saint-Étienne, due to the obvious regional reasons, against whom they contest the Derby du Rhône. However, following their years of dominance at the start of the millennium, a whole new group of rivalries against the likes of Marseille, Bordeaux, Paris Saint-Germain, and Lille were born.

Lyon were the sole French representative of the G14 group of leading European football clubs and are founder members of its successor, the European Club Association, which they have been a part of since its inception in 2008.

Appearing in the UEFA Champions League 12 times, Lyon's best showing came in the 2009-2010 season, with the club reaching the semi-finals of the competition for the first time after three previous quarter-final appearances. The club's one European title came in the 1997 UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Having previously been tagged as the richest club in the country, PSG are now challenging Lyon following their takeover by their Qatari owners. Lyon are currently behind Olympique Marseille as France's most popular club.

The current chairman of Lyon is Jean-Michel Aulas, who has also owned the club since taking control in 1987. Former Lyon midfielder Rémi Garde has been the club's manager since 2011, leading the club to the Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions titles during his time in charge.
