Ajax

Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax, Ajax for short, were founded back in 1900, and since then have gone on to be the most successful club in Dutch history. After years of playing at the cramped De Meer Stadion, the club moved to the 53,052-capacity Amsterdam Arena in 1996.

Alongside Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven, Ajax are considered one of Holland's "big three" clubs. They are also one of just three clubs never to have suffered relegation. In terms of silverware, Ajax are absolutely laden with it. Domestically, they have won 32 Eredivsie titles, 18 KNVB Cups 18, and eight Johan Cruijff Shields. Ajax's nearest rivals PSV have just 21 national titles. As for the international stage, they have won a hugely impressive four European Cups/Champions League titles, one UEFA Cup, and one Cup Winners' Cup. Ajax, along with Barcelona, are the fifth most successful club in Europe.

Ajax have had two truly great sides in their history. The first was the team that graced the De Meer Stadion in the early 70s. The side was managed by the great Rinus Michels, but the catalyst behind their success was the club's prodigal son, Johan Cruijff. The two led the club to three consecutive European Cup wins between 1971 and 1973, beating high calibre opponents Panathinaikos, Inter Milan and Juventus. The side also won the league in 1970, 1972 and 1973.  Cruijff left the club to join Barcelona in 1973, and in total played 276 games, scoring 204 goals.

The side that beat AC Milan in the 1995 Champions League final is perhaps the greatest the club have produced. Managed by current Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, the side made up the backbone of the Dutch national side for years to come. In goal there was Edwin van der Sar, then they boasted Frank de Boer and Frank Rijkaard at the back. In midfield there was Marc Overmars, Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf, and up front was Jari Litmanen. Meanwhile, strikers Nwankwo Kanu and Patrick Kluivert were on the bench.

Ajax compete in the "De Klassieker" with Feyenoord, who are from Rotterdam, the second largest city in the country. In the 70s, the two clubs were the only teams capable of winning domestic or European silverware, so when they clashed it was the barometer as to which team was the best in Holland. The fixture is seen in the public eye as "The graceful and elegant football of Ajax, against the indomitable fighting spirit of Feyenoord". Of the 165 meetings, Ajax have won 73 in comparison to Feyenoord's 54.
