Misery is etched on Gerrard's face as Liverpool go out of the Champions League
"A poor run of results told for Liverpool, and despite a win at Debrecen, victory for Fiorentina over Lyon saw Rafa Reds drop out of the competition. It's the Europa League for Liverpool now. "
Win over Debrecen is not enough for the Reds who enter the Europa League following Fiorentina's victory over Lyon
Liverpool, winners in 2005 and finalists in 2007, are out of this season's Champions League.
In the end, a poor run of results told, and despite a win at Debrecen, victory for Fiorentina over Lyon saw Rafa Reds drop out of the competition. It's the Europa League for Liverpool now.
Given their Champions League pedigree punters were happy to back the Anfield club at incredibly low prices to reach the knockout stages - one customer taking [1.02] on the Reds reaching the last 16.
Fiorentina qualified from Group E thanks to a nervy 1-0 win over Lyon, rewarding those who had backed the Viola at [6.4] to make the latter stages.
Rangers are also out of the competition after another miserable home defeat - 2-0 at the hands of Stuttgart.
The German club must now win at home to Romanian outfit Unirea Urziceni in a final group game play-off. Dan Petrescu's team have been backed at a high of [19.0] to make it out of Group G but have since been backed at odds-on.
Group F has come to a fantastic final day showdown with all four teams - Barcelona, Inter Milan, Dinamo Kiev and Rubin Kazan - all capable of making the last 16.
Barca, the champions and [4.9] favourites for the competition, could have gone out tonight but comfortably overcame Inter Milan, 2-0, in front of the home fans. Rubin Kazan and Kiev could not be separated with their game ending goalless.
In Group H, Arsenal continued their breeze into the knockout stages with a 2-0 win over Standard Liege while Olympiakos gave themselves a good chance of going through following their 0-0 draw with AZ Alkmaar.
