Donald Trump has, for the first time, become favourite on the Betfair Exchange market to become Republican nominee, now rated as a 34% chance to be the choice of the party to become the next President...

"The market for Republican Nominee has been the tightest betting contest in the 2016 US Presidential election so far and this the first time Trump has been favourite, which could well present a significant shift at a pivotal time in the campaign."

The controversial businessman has seen his price steadily move in from a high of 6/16.8 since he declared candidacy and it hit a low of 2/12.96 on Wednesday morning, putting him ahead of Marco Rubio (11/53.15 or a 31% chance) in the market.

Ted Cruz is now trading at 7/24.5 - a 22% chance - with Jeb Bush now as big as 17/29.4, equating to just a 10% chance of success.

When Trump declared his candidacy Bush was the firm favourite with a 45% chance of winning, according to Exchange customers, but is now the fourth favourite. Rubio took over as favourite in mid-October but Trump's price has gradually crept in.
