Our racing expert has three selections in the Aintree Foxhunters

After tipping the winner of the Hunters' Chase at Cheltenham, Rhys Williams has had an early look at the Aintree Foxhunters and has three selections to consider...

Aintree Foxhunters - Back Time Leader

Another big hunter chase and another case of taking on the front end of the market.

Its On The Line is currently favourite but I'm not convinced the shorter trip of this race is ideal for him and he got a long way back before falling at Becher's Brook in last year's race.

Ferns Lock got very worked up before the race at Cheltenham and while the shorter trip will suit him, I worry that he might once again compromise his chance in the preliminaries given the atmosphere at Aintree.

Romeo Magico just looks short at a single-figure price given what he's achieved so far.

Last year's winner, Famous Clermont, is the only other horse at a single-figure price. He badly need the run on his first start of this season and his jumping let him down at Wincanton last time so he does have excuses for the defeats but I can't see any edge in the price.

Time Leader was a selection in this column for Cheltenham and I'm once again backing him at Aintree. The ground at Cheltenham was against him and the trip looked likely to stretch his stamina so he ran a huge race in defeat, jumping the last in front before fading on the run-in with a mistake at that fence not helping his cause.

He finished fifth in this race last year, which was a good run considering he banked the Chair and wasn't great at the Canal Turn, and he looks a better horse this season so hopefully he will put in a slicker round of jumping now that he has experience over the fences.

In an ideal world, Time Leader could do with the rain eventually stopping so that he might get the better ground that he wants but he showed at Cheltenham that he can still be effective on testing ground. Any double-figure prices appeal.

Aintree Foxhunters - Back Fier Jaguen

Fier Jaguen was sent off towards the head of the market in last year's renewal but after racing enthusiastically in front, he pitched on landing at the seventh and unseated rider.

He got back to winning ways at Cheltenham next time, despite jumping badly out to the right for much of the race, and he's won both starts in points this season. However, he's not been quite as impressive as in the past and he didn't have too much left in the tank at the finish last time.

While the yard is going well this year, it hasn't been quite in the same unstoppable form that it was for much of last season and that may partly be the reason for Fier Jaguen not having been at his brilliant best in his two runs this season.

Hopefully, they can find the key to that between now and the race as if he turns up at his best, Fier Jaguen would have a good chance despite the obvious concern of him jumping out to the right and I'm not sure this race is any stronger than last season's renewal when he was sent off at 11/2. Any 12/113.00 or bigger appeals.

Aintree Foxhunters - Back Bennys King

With the rain continuing to fall, I've decided to add a third selection in the Foxhunters as the horse in question has drifted since the initial column despite now looking to have a better chance than was the case at that time.

Bennys King finished second in this race last year despite not always jumping too well and the ground possibly being quicker than ideal for him.

After being pulled up in two handicap chases with cheekpieces removed, he's been in better form since returning to this sphere and with the headgear back on. He ran well considering the mistakes he made and that he was carrying a big penalty at Taunton before being no match for subsequent Cheltenham winner Sine Nomine at Wetherby.

On his latest start at Leicester in very testing ground, he built on those two runs with an impressive display. His jumping was slick and he powered clear of his rivals in the closing stages to win by 23 lengths despite being eased on the run-in.

While Bennys King is effective on decent ground, I think he flourishes on soft and heavy ground and he currently looks likely to have those conditions. He should have benefitted from the experience of jumping these fences last season and hopefully will be slicker this time as a result.

One negative is that neither of the jockeys who have ridden Bennys King this season would be able to claim at Aintree but despite that I think he's overpriced given the likely ground and that at least one of those who initially looked a main danger now seems unlikely to turn up.

Any 14/115.00 or bigger appeals.
