Wales v Bosnia World Cup Play-Off: Three stats and three bets for Thursday

A huge night is on the cards at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday when Wales face Bosnia-Herzegovina in a play-off semi-final for the 2026 World Cup. The winners of this semi-final will play the winners of Italy v Northern Ireland at home next Tuesday (31 March )for a place at the finals in Canada, Mexico and the US this summer.

Wales reached the finals of the last World Cup, in Qatar in 2022, ending a 64 year absence. Although they were knocked out in the Group stage, getting there was a huge achievement. To appear at consecutive finals would be a further sign that Welsh football is in rude health.

Wales are ranked 40 places above their opponents on Thursday but they have appeared in play-offs for the World Cup and Euros. The good news for Bellamy and his players is that Bosnia-Herzegovina have drawn three of those matches and lost four without winning.

Bosnia captain Edin Dzeko has netted five goals in seven games in 2026 World Cup qualifying; since the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup, only Robert Lewandowski for Poland (34) and Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal (34) have scored more UEFA World Cup qualifier goals than Dzeko (30 in 44 games).
