Champions to run riot
Darmstadt v Bayern Munich
Saturday 16 March, 14:30
Although Bayern Munich won 8-1 against Mainz last weekend, they weren't able to make any headway in the Bundesliga title race. Bayer Leverkusen's win over Wolfsburg maintained the ten-point gap between the top two, and there are just nine matchdays left. If Bayern were to win the title from here, it would be an unprecedented achievement.
Harry Kane was once again the star of the show last weekend, becoming the first player in Bundesliga history to score four hat-tricks in their maiden campaign in the German top flight. If the England captain scores at Darmstadt on Saturday, he'll move beyond Germany legend Uwe Seeler and record the best ever goal tally by a Bundesliga debutant. Kane is currently on 30 goals in the league, and Robert Lewandowski's record of 41 is still reachable.
Kane should get plenty of chances against a Darmstadt side that is bottom of the table. Even though the Lilies haven't been cut adrift, they are five points from escaping the automatic dropzone, and with 60 goals conceded they have the worst defensive record in the division. Darmstadt lost 8-0 in the reverse fixture at the Allianz Arena, a bizarre game that saw the second half played with ten men against nine.
Bayern have the best attacking record in the league with 73 goals scored, and I expect a comfortable win here. We can use the Sportsbook's Bet Builder to back Kane to score, Bayern to win and Over 3.5 Goals at 2.1411/10. Over 3.5 Goals had landed in 15 of Bayern's 25 league games this term, and 11 of Darmstadt's.
Mainz to bounce back
Mainz v Bochum
Saturday 16 March, 14:30
It sounds absurd, but Mainz weren't actually that bad in last weekend's 8-1 drubbing at Bayern. With the score at 2-1, teenage star Brajan Gruda fired a shot just over the Bayern bar. If that effort had flown in, we would have had a very different game, but Bayern went on to make it 3-1 just before the break and Mainz collapsed in the second half.
Mainz still have a chance to avoid automatic relegation, and the positivity of new coach Bo Henriksen is rubbing off on his players. They still look like a unit, and I imagine the Danish tactician will use that heavy defeat in Munich as fuel to generate a response.
Bochum might end up being the perfect opponents. They have lost three straight games in the league, leaking 11 goals in the process, and their away form is atrocious. Thomas Letsch's team have lost four of their last five on their travels, and their only away win all season was against the bottom side Darmstadt.
I'm not excited by the idea of backing the hosts to win at 1.834/5 (they have only won twice all season), so instead I'll throw in a different pro-Mainz angle. Jonathan Burkardt has scored a couple of goals since his return from a long-term knee injury, and he seems overpriced in the Anytime Goalscorer market at 21/10. Bochum are conceding plenty of goals, and Burkardt's pace can cause lots of problems.
Openda can forget Madrid misses
Köln v RB Leipzig
Friday 15 March, 19:30
Live on Sky Sports
Köln are still in deep relegation danger, but they showed their fighting spirit in coming back from a deficit to draw the Rhineland derby 3-3 at Borussia Mönchengladbach last weekend, and they recently managed a creditable 1-1 draw at Champions League chasers Stuttgart.
Coach Timo Schultz has collected eight points from his nine games in charge, which isn't earth-shattering, but has put the Billy Goats in the relegation play-off spot instead of the automatic dropzone. In the last home game against local rivals and Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, FC battled bravely in a 2-0 defeat despite having a player sent off in the first quarter of an hour.
However, Köln are still leaking goals against the big hitters. They conceded four at home to Borussia Dortmund, six in Leipzig, three at the BayArena and two in Stuttgart. I expect them to give up chances against an RB Leipzig side that has one of the league's best strikers in Lois Openda.
The Belgian international missed a number of outstanding chances in the recent Champions League tie with Real Madrid, and had he taken those opportunities, Die Roten Bullen may well have progressed. However, I'm keeping faith with a man who has 21 goals in all competitions this term, and who has scored in seven of his last ten league appearances.
You can back Openda to score at 2.021/1.
