Borussia Dortmund

Formed in 1909 by 17 football players from the Dortmund area, Borussia Dortmund currently compete in the Bundesliga, which the club have won on eight different occasions, most recently in the 2011-2012 season.

The club currently boasts a membership of 95,000, making Dortmund the third largest football club in terms of membership in Germany. Borussia Dortmund's main colours are black and yellow, giving the club its nickname "die Schwarzgelben" (the black and yellows).

After moving from the Stadion Rote Erde to Westfalenstadion in 1974, Dortmund's attendances have grown to routinely fill the 80,645-seater stadium, giving the club the honour of boasting the highest average attendance of any football club in the world, and also helping to create one of world football's most intimidating atmospheres.

As well as their eight Bundesliga titles, the club have won three DFB-Pokals, four DFL-Supercups, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and one Intercontinental Cup. Dortmund's Cup Winners' Cup triumph in 1966 made them the first German club to win a title in European football.

Their Champions League success in 1997 remains the club's sole triumph in the competition. Two goals from Karl-Heinz Riedle and another from substitute Lars Ricken helped the Germans secure a famous 3-1 victory over Juventus in Munich. The club nearly repeated their feat from 1997 in the 2012-2013 competition, reaching the Champions League final before losing 2-1 in a thrilling final against rivals Bayern Munich at Wembley.

Dortmund play their main rivals, Schalke, in games known as the Revierderby. As well as their rivalry with neighbours Schalke, BVB also have a bitter rivalry with Bayern Munich, known as Der Klassiker (The Classic), which has grown during recent years as the two clubs have fought it out for dominance in German football.

Current manager Jurgen Klopp took charge of the team in 2008 as manager. Since arriving, the coach has led the club to the Bundesliga title (in 2011 and 2012), the DFB-Pokal in 2012, and the DFL-Supercup in 2013. The former Mainz 05 boss has also won German Football's Manager of the Year title in 2011 and 2012 following Dortmund's back-to-back Bundesliga titles.

The Dortmund manager has gained many fans for his honest and relaxed approach to the game, playing an important role in turning BVB into one of world football's most powerful clubs.
