Everton v Wolves Tip: Back Barry to strike in home win

Everton have progressed from 12 of their last 13 EFL Cup ties against sides from outside of the Premier League, failing only against QPR in the 2021-22 third round. Wolves, meanwhile, have won just one of their last 16 away games against top-flight sides in the EFL Cup (D3 L12), beating Southampton 2-0 in 2017-18.

Against Preston in the second round, Thierno Barry became Everton's first hat-trick scorer in the EFL Cup since Dominic Calvert-Lewin against West Ham in September 2020.

Fleetwood v Sheff Utd Tip: Back L2 side to avoid defeat in normal time

All four of Sheffield United's away games at Fleetwood Town in all competitions have been drawn, three in League One from 2014 to 2016 and one in the EFL Trophy in November 2015.

The Championship Blades are two divisions above Fleetwood but the Sheffield club arrive on a run of three consecutive defeats, while the hosts are unbeaten in eight (W4D4) in all competitions this term.

Coventry v Aston Villa Tip: Back Abraham to strike

Two struggling teams, both lacking a Premier League win in their opening four games, and in Coventry's case pointless and goalless. Villa beat Brugge 3-2 on the road in the Champions League last week and the Europa League winners remain a formidable cup outfit. However, they have been eliminated at the third round stage in four of the last five seasons of the EFL Cup, so Unai Emery seems to have little regard for this competition.

We can't trust either side so let's make it interesting by entering the player markets, namely the Anytime Goalscorer. Villa's Tammy Abraham has scored four goals in six away appearances in the EFL Cup, despite starting just two of those matches. He is averaging 65 minutes-per-goal in those six outings, so maybe he can kickstart his season here.

Man Utd v Brighton Tip: Back Seagulls to soar again

This has away win written all over it, in part due to the ways the respective teams have started the season and also because the Seagulls have been flying at Old Trafford on recent visits. Brighton have won four of their last five away games against Manchester United in all competitions (L1), most recently a 2-1 win in last season's FA Cup.

Brighton have won five of their last six third round matches in the EFL Cup (L1). So far in the Premier League this term, the Seagulls have won two, draw one and suffered their only defeat in a 4-3 at Chelsea. United are L2W1D1 and the pressure is on Michael Carrick. There is no reason to believe Brighton can't extend their fine Old Trafford form here.
