After an eventful 24 hours, which saw Keir Starmer's premiership in crisis and Donald Trump damaged by Jeffrey Epstein emails, it's worth looking at what the Betfair Exchange politics markets say about the state of play in the UK and US...

  • Labour's Streeting overtakes Farage in next PM betting

  • Starmer odds-on to leave as Labour leader next year

  • Democrats odds-on to win next US presidential election

Streeting new favourite to be next Prime Minister

Wes Streeting is the new favourite on the Betfair Exchange to be tthe UK's next prime minister as his row with Keir Starmer continued to rock the government.

The Labour health secretary 4.47/2 overtook Nigel Farage 6.25/1 in the market after the battle between Streeting and 10 Downing Street exploded into the public realm.

As Labour MPs had their say on the conflict that is tearing apart the government, reports of a potential leadership challenge continued.

Starmer v Streeting - what's it all about?

The spat comes after months of criticism from inside and outside Labour of Starmer's leadership. He is 1.855/6 to leave as Labour leader next year.

Downing Street sources, allegedly involving Starmer's chief of staff Morgan McSweeney, claimed on Tuesday that Streeting was plotting to overthrow the PM as Labour leader.

Streeting responded furiously, claiming the accusations were evidence of a toxic culture in Downing Street. Starmer apologised to Streeting in a phone call on Wednesday evening and told his team on Thursday that briefings against ministers were unacceptable.

This seems unlikely to be the end of the matter though. Starmer is facing mounting calls to sack McSweeney.

Why is Streeting favourite to be next prime minister?

Reports claim Streeting could challenge Starmer for the Labour leadership after the budget which takes place on 26 November or if Labour perform poorly in next May's local election.

If Streeting succeeded in ousting Starmer as Labour leader then, because Labour are the largest party in the House of Commons, the Ilford North MP would become the prime minister.

Streeting 4.47/2 is the favourite to be the next Labour leader on the Betfair Exchange. But the minister who brings down a beleagured PM doesn't always get the job - just ask Michael Hestletine who took on Margaret Thatcher before John Major succeeded her - and there are other contenders.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is 9.28/1 to be next Labour leader. Former-deputy leader Angela Rayner 9.417/2 and Manchester mayor Andy Burnham 10.519/2 would also be interested in the job. Some commentators believe Ed Miliband 17.016/1, who lead Labour from 2010-15, could even make a bid to win a sensational return to the role.

Whether it is Starmer, Streeting or none of the politicians mentioned above, whoever leads Labour into the next general election faces a difficult task.

Labour are 3.814/5 to win the most seats while Reform UK are 1.8810/11. The Conservatives are 7.26/1.

US Election 2028 - Dems favs after more Trump-Epstein links

The Democrats are the odds-on favourites to be the winning party at the next US presidential election after Jeffrey Epstein emails that could damage Donald Trump's reputation entered the public domain.

The election is scheduled for 2028 and, while Trump will be ineligible to run as he is currently serving his second term in the White House, his actions will have an impact on the race.

The Democrats are 1.9420/21 favourites with the Republicans 2.111/10 so, while there is not a huge amount in it and three years to go, the Betfair Exchange, which predicted his election victory a year ago, makes unpleasant reading for Trump.

At the same time, however, current vice president and Republican hopeful for 2028 JD Vance is 3.8514/5 favourite to be the next president.  The Democratic governor of California Gavin Newsom 5.95/1 his party's shortest priced candidate.

The 20,000 pages of documents are a further reminder of Trump's former-friendship with Epstein. They have the potential to damage the US president's reputation and, while reporters continue to comb through the details, Trump will be unhappy about being linked to the late convicted sex trafficker.
