Basement battle in the Bundesliga
Both of these teams are slumping just at the wrong time and now they'll meet in Gelsenkirchen as the bottom two in the table scrapping for survival.
Schalke sit bottom with Hertha just one place and one point above them, with safety five and four points away respectively - making this the definition of a relegation six pointer.
A limp 2-0 defeat at Hoffenheim saw Schalke slip to the bottom, while Hertha lost 1-0 to RB Leipzig to make it five games without a win (D2 L3).
Schalke are 7/5 home favourites but the Veltins-Arena hasn't been a fortress - far from it in fact as Thomas Reis' side have the worst home record in the Bundesliga.
So it's worst versus worst on Friday night as although Schalke have won the fewest home points, scored the fewest goals and conceded the most - Hertha just happen to be the worst travellers in the division.
It means the 21/10 on an away win also comes with a huge amount of risk and the 23/10 price on the draw will prove popular with neither side looking like winning of late.
Count those cards in relegation scrap
Both attacks could well take advantage of two poor defences to provide us with some goals, but Hertha only hit the target once last week and Schalke's goal-shy stats at home make that another risky play.
Hertha picked up four bookings last week against Leipzig and while Schalke have been given a rocket by their manage for being too timid, the visitors don't have that problem.
They got five bookings in the reverse fixture at home, so getting over 2.5 cards here at 11/10 here looks like a nice play.
And given that Schalke have been given a boot up the backside, and the special circumstances surrounding this game, I'll take the hosts to match that and add in the 7/5 on Schalke to get over 2.5 cards also.
With quality, and perhaps goals, in short supply, sometimes it pays to back the physical aspects of these basement battles as determination takes over from talent with survival on the line.
