James Tarkowski: Big goal threat against Arsenal from set pieces

Our football props column is focusing on new-look Everton in Monday night's Merseyside derby with Liverpool at Anfield...

  • Expect set-piece shots from visitors

  • Crosses for DCL also likely tactics

  • Back 5/1 Bet Builder in derby

We got a real insight into how Everton are going to play under Sean Dyche last week when they stunned leaders Arsenal in the new manager's first game in charge.

They got in plenty of crosses, trying to get the best out of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and really targeted set-plays from which Dyche's former Burnley star James Tarkowski was a massive threat.

Given what we saw at Goodison, with Dwight McNeil seeking out Tarkowski on numerous occasions, the centre-back can immediately be put down for 1+ shot - even money about that looks big as a single.

Tarkowski managed two shots last week and has now landed this bet in seven of his last 10 games.

Amadou Onana was another aerial threat for the Toffees in set-piece situations and with the Belgian also offering shot potential with his runs from midfield, I'm happy to add him down in the same market - he's had 1+ shot in 14 of his 19 starts for Everton so far.

It would be wrong not to point out Everton have had some shocking displays at Anfield in recent years but the new boss should help on that front, while it's clearly a decent time to be playing Liverpool.

The Reds have only one win so far in 2023 (in the FA Cup at Wolves), while in Premier League games they've taken one point from their last four matches.

They've shipped three against Wolves, Brighton and Brentford in that period and with first-choice centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate again set to miss out here, their defensive issues remain.

Before moving on from Onana, it's worth pointing out he's Everton leading fouler this season and in what is always a feisty fixture, he looks good for 2+ fouls, something he's managed in four of six post-World Cup games.

He also landed this in the reverse fixture - a -0-0 draw at Goodison - when he also picked up a yellow card.

Those three legs produce a 7/2 Bet Builder but I'm also keen on Calvert-Lewin for shots.

Four of his last six starts have seen him have at least two shots and last week's tally of four was very much a result of Dyche's tactics.

The problem is he is (once again) an injury doubt for this one.

His inclusion in the bet takes it north of 5/1. If he fails to make the matchday squad, the bet will be settled as the 7/2 treble. If he starts on the bench, you can easily cashout the four-fold and place the three-legged bet instead.
