At 6/4 back Man City to beat Liverpool, says Lewis Jones

Man City are a tantalising 6/42.50 to win at Anfield with the betting markets potentially underestimating their siege mentality following the financial-ruling verdict. Lewis Jones previews the game, and he has uncovered a tasty player prop angle involving Marc Guehi...

There are seismic Premier League fixtures, and then there is Liverpool against Manchester City at Anfield with the temperature turned up to boiling point.

Sunday's showdown has enough sporting significance without the extraordinary backdrop of an independent Premier League Commission finding City guilty of serious financial-rule breaches spanning nine seasons. City have appealed, meaning the sporting consequences remain unresolved, but that will do little to cool the atmosphere on Merseyside.

Expect a hostile, angry Anfield.

Liverpool supporters will relish the opportunity to make their feelings known and City will need to handle the noise as well as the opposition. But betting markets can be guilty of overreacting to a narrative. The temptation is to assume the emotion automatically favours Liverpool, or that City will be distracted by the controversy. Neither is a given.

This Man City side have spent years thriving under pressure, while Liverpool know that a charged atmosphere is only an advantage if it translates into intensity, discipline and quality on the pitch.

For bettors, the key is separating the theatre from the tactical reality. Does the occasion produce a frantic, high-event contest? Or will City try to suffocate the atmosphere through possession and use the situation to their advantage from siege mentality point of view? It's a fascinating fixture.

Liverpool v Man City Tip 1 - Back the away win

The temptation is to side with Liverpool at Anfield given the narrative but from a betting perspective I'm struggling to get away from Manchester City at 6/42.50.

There is little evidence so far that the independent commission's verdict has destabilised Man City's players. It is far too early to make that assumption, and the opposite reaction is just as plausible.

Footballers are human beings, and when a group feels it is being attacked from the outside, a siege mentality can be a powerful motivator. City have the experience, the quality and the manager in Enzo Maresca who was so cool under pressure in the pre-match press conference to turn that noise into fuel rather than a distraction.

Let's not forget, either, that this is a side sitting top of the Premier League.

We are not backing a team in crisis. We are backing one of the strongest squads in the country at odds of 6/42.50 to win a game.

City won all three meetings with Liverpool last season too.

Liverpool at [17/10] is understandable given Anfield's influence but atmosphere alone does not guarantee a result. The value may lie in trusting City's resilience and quality rather than speculating on the psychological impact of a verdict that has yet to produce settled sporting consequences.

Liverpool v Man City Tip 2 - Oppose goals?

The goals market might be getting carried away with the occasion. Over 2.5 goals is just 8/111.73 with under 2.5 available at 11/82.38 suggesting the expectation is for an open, end-to-end spectacle. But are we paying a premium for the narrative rather than the numbers?

Liverpool have looked more assured defensively since Ronald Araújo moved to right-back, keeping three consecutive clean sheets.

That improvement matters when assessing a fixture in which the emotional temperature is likely to be high. With Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak both injured, Liverpool are also missing important attacking options, which could make control and defensive solidity their best route to a result.

There is an obvious argument that the occasion, the hostility and the quality on both sides produce goals. But that feels heavily reflected in the price already. City may be happy to dominate possession, while Liverpool have good reason to avoid a shootout. If pushed I'd rather back the under 2.5 line.

Liverpool v Man City Tip 3 - Guehi fouls market offers Anfield value

There is a fascinating angle in the player fouls market and it involves Marc Guehi being put through the wringer by Lewis Koumas.

With Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo injured, Koumas is in line for what could be the biggest game of his career. He plays like a wrecking ball, bringing an aggressive, all-action approach to the centre-forward role.

Since the start of last season, he has averaged 2.1 fouls per game for club and country, while his eight fouls in just 220 minutes of action for Wales over the international break underline that appetite for contact.

That is precisely the sort of intensity Andoni Iraola will relish if Koumas is tasked with leading the line. His forwards are expected to set the tone for the press, harrying defenders and making life uncomfortable in possession.

Guehi could find himself right in the firing line. He is hardly shy when it comes to drawing contact, having won at least one foul in 23 of his last 28 starts for club and country, averaging 1.45 per game.

Winning two fouls is a bigger ask, but at 7/52.40, the price is appealing if Koumas starts up front. The key is that this is not just about a defender being targeted; it is about the aggressive profile of the opponent he may face.
