Torino will guarantee their survival in Serie A if they avoid defeat in Rome tonight, but Tobias Gourlay's not sure they've got the defence to keep Lazio in check
"Simone Inzaghi's Lazio have won 12 straight Serie A home matches"
Lazio v Torino
In Sweden yesterday, Malmo beat Kalmar 3-1 to give us a winning start to the week.
We're in Italy today for the Serie A game between sixth-placed Lazio and 17th-placed Torino. Simone Inzaghi's Lazio have won 12 straight Serie A home matches, beating anyone from third-placed Napoli to bottom-of-the-league Parma. Whatever happens in this match, the Biancocelesti will finish the season in sixth. But there is one possible reason why their coach will want them to give the usual 110% tonight: his brother Pippo is in charge of Benevento, the team in 18th who need Lazio to beat Torino tonight if they are to stand any chance of avoiding the drop when they play Torino in this weekend's final round of matches.
Torino are three points ahead of Benevento going into this game in hand. If they lose tonight and then lose to Benevento on Sunday, they will be relegated because they have the losing head-to-head record. So a draw would suit them just fine this evening but, if Lazio are playing hard, it's doubtful Il Toro will be able to contain them.
Davide Nicola's men have managed just three clean sheets from 18 away games this term. Last time out on the road, they lost 1-4 at 15th-placed Spezia. In their most recent home game, they conceded seven times against AC Milan. Lazio themselves scored four in winning the reverse fixture in Turin (4-3) and also in winning this fixture last season (4-0).
The form book says Lazio should be odds-on favourites. There's a question mark around their commitment to the cause, but that's accounted for in the odds-against price current available. We'll back Lazio to make it 13 in a row at the Stadio Olimpico and condemn Torino to a loser-goes-down showdown with Benevento on Sunday night.
