Sol Campbell played just one match for Notts County.
Former Arsenal and England defender Sol Campbell walked out on the League Two favourites for promotion this morning. Betting.betfair.com talked exclusively to his now former team-mate at Notts County, Ben Davies.
Sol Campbell has left Notts County by mutual consent after playing just one match for the club.
Campbell is understood to have been unhappy about his team's inability to keep possession during their 2-1 defeat away to Morecambe at the weekend. The defeat left County in eighth place in League Two, although they remain [3.9] favourites on Betfair to win the division and [1.86] jollies for promotion.
The arrival of the former Tottenham, Arsenal and England defender was seen as Sven Goran Eriksson's greatest transfer coup so far. On his arrival, Eriksson, the club's Director Of Football said: "He has seen the future. It's a challenge but I think everyone connected to the club are prepared for that challenge. It's refreshing."
Other than his disappointment at the manner of Notts' midweek defeat, it's not clear what the 35 year-old's reasons were for calling time on his spell at Meadow Lane. Executive chairman Peter Trembling told the club website: "(He) could not adjust to the long-term nature of the project under way at Notts County."
Speaking exclusively to betting.betfair, Notts County midfielder Ben Davies was quick to emphasise what a loss to the team he will be: "He's a massive loss, a top bloke and a top defender. It's such a huge surprise and we don't know what his reasons were, only he knows. But we just have to get on with it. For the time being we'll just have to keep on going with the players we've got but I'd expect his wages to free up money to strengthen the squad as soon as possible."
It is unclear what Campbell, who is believed to have been on a contract worth £40,000 per week, will do next, though a return to Tottenham Hotspur is unlikely after manager Harry Redknapp revealed that if he had been in charge of any other club than Spurs he would have attempted to sign him. Campbell famously left Tottenham on a free transfer to join arch-rivals Arsenal and is it's very unlikely he'd be welcomed back by the fans.
