Serie A Betting: Milan should beat Reggina but it's all too little too late
Dan "The Betting Man" Fitch updates us on events at the top and bottom of the Serie A table as Milan prepare to host Reggina in a match that Kaka and co really do need to win
Here we are, a full seven days from my last Serie A match preview and absolutely nothing has changed. Last week AC Milan travelled to Turin to face Juventus and had the chance to gain ground on a Fiorentina side that were away to Inter Milan.
Of course, Milan did nothing of the sort. They lost to Juventus, whilst Fiorentina also lost to Inter. It could have been worse for Milan though. Sixth placed Sampdoria had the chance to leapfrog them, but also conspired to lose, 1-0 to Reggina. Why did I bother to write anything at all last week? It must be the money, because of late, it's certainly not a love of Serie A.
This weekend Milan host the conquerors of Sampdoria, in the form of relegation threatened Reggina. It's a must win match for both teams and as ever, all the action can be witnessed on your PC, via the technological miracle that John Logie Baird would have never thought possible; Betfair Live Video.
Juventus' 3-2 win over Milan, along with their midweek 3-0 demolition of Parma, has cemented their Champions League place for next season. Juventus took an early lead against Milan, with a well placed finish by Del Piero. Milan quickly hit back to equalise though the offside king Inzaghi, when presented with a tap in from a cross from Kaka. Inzaghi then repeated the trick of always being in the right place to score the easy goal, when Bonera presented him with a chance, to make it 2-1.
But Juventus equalised on the stroke of half time, when Kalac saved from Trezeguet and Salihamidzic was first to the rebound. From this moment it could have gone either way, but the turning point was the sending off of Bonera for Milan. Juventus' pressure paid off with ten minutes remaining, when Salihamidzic scored again, to make it 3-2.
Fiorentina's two games are at home, suggesting that Milan may have to take six points from their next couple of fixtures, just to stay in touch. They then face Inter, who may well need a victory to keep Roma at arms' length, in the challenge for the Serie A title. It all seems like it'll be too much for Milan's ageing stars.
It does seem likely that Milan will be bringing Ronaldinho in during the close season, which will add neither youthful exuberance, nor harmony to the Milan side. If the toothsome Brazilian were to be played alongside Kaka, Milan would have to play with only one up front and would Pato be strong enough to perform this role?
Other rumours abound, that Milan have made a bid for Ruud Van Nistlerooy. Despite his age, I still think that Van Nistlerooy has a lot of goals left in him, but I can't believe that Madrid would let him go. Real have struggled when he's been absent this season and hardly need the modest fee that Van Nistlerooy could attract.
With the UEFA Cup beckoning, surely it would make more sense for Milan to forget Serie A next season, get rid of a good half of their squad and bring in some young and hungry players. It doesn't seem on the cards though and I expect some more elderly big names to be brought in, to try to plug the cracks. Besides, Berlusconi will be busy running the country this summer, probably into the ground.
Reggina are unbeaten for the last five home games, but their away form remains shocking, having not recorded a win on the road all season. I can't see them changing this record on Sunday, but Reggina's destiny remains in their own hands. In their final four games, they play the side directly below them in Empoli and the three sides above them in Parma, Cagliari and Catania. It's very tight down there and therefore the [1.5] for Reggina to be relegated is much too low.
AC Milan are [1.32] with Reggina [16.5] and the draw [5.3]. The half time/full time result provides much better value at [1.88] and with six out of the last seven Milan matches breaking the 2.5 goals barrier, I also like the [1.93] for overs.
