While we were right about Inter winning well against Sampdoria, sadly their 3-0 success didn't feature a goal from Lautaro Martinez. There's no need to panic though, as we are still slightly in profit for the week. We'll wrap up in the Bundesliga, because I think struggling Schalke can upset high-flying Freiburg.
It's been a typically chaotic month for Schalke, a club where drama is the norm. First, the Royal Blues fired coach Frank Kramer after a poor start to the season, and now sporting director Rouven Schröder has left. Schröder has reportedly left for a variety of reasons, including the serious illness of a close friend. It is also believed he opposed the hiring of former Bochum coach Thomas Reis as Kramer's replacement.
Reis wanted to speak to Schalke about the coaching vacancy in the summer, but Ruhr rivals Bochum reportedly blocked those talks, and just months later they sacked him anyway. The job Reis did at Bochum shouldn't be underestimated - he took a traditional club that had been struggling, won the Bundesliga 2. title and then kept the club in the top flight last term. I believe he can squeeze a bit more out of a limited but hard-working squad. For example, Schalke striker Sebastian Polter thrived under Reis last term, scoring ten league goals.
Freiburg are having an amazing campaign, and have already won their Europa League group. However, a punishing schedule must soon take its toll - this game will be SCF's ninth game in October alone. On the road, Freiburg have gone three league matches without a win, having drawn at Hoffenheim and Hertha Berlin and having been thrashed 5-0 at Bayern. Overall in the top flight, Christian Streich's men have won just two of their last six, despite the fact they are still in the European places.
Freiburg seem too short to me at 1.981/1, so I'll lay them. I think Reis will know just how to whip up a crowd from the Ruhrpott, and the change in the dugout might give Schalke the boost they need.
