Marseille

Olympique de Marseille came to life in 1899 and have spent most of their time playing in the French Ligue 1. Their home since 1937 has been the intimidating 60,031-capacity Stade Velodrome.

With nine Ligue 1 titles in France, Marseille are second only to St. Etienne, but they have won the Coupe de France a record 10 times and, with three Coupe de la Ligue wins, they are joint record holders alongside PSG and Bordeaux.

In Europe they have won the Champions League. This win came in 1993 when they defeated AC Milan 1-0. They finished runner up in 1991.

Marseille were also at the heart of one of the biggest controversies in European football. In 1994 the club suffered enforced relegation after financial irregularities and allegations of match fixing surfaced. Ahead of the 1993 final with Milan, the club faced Valenciennes, whose players Jacques Glassmann, Jorge Burruchaga and Christophe Robert were contacted and instructed to let Marseille win and not injure any players due to the impending final. After being reported, the club were stripped of their Ligue 1 title and relegated to the second division. Marseille stayed in the French Ligue 2 for two years, and it wasn't until 1996 that they returned to the top flight.

During the Bernard Tapie Presidential era, the club brought in many international superstars, such as Rudi Voller, Abedi Pele, Chris Waddle and Jean-Pierre Papin. Papin was brilliant at Marseille; he scored 134 goals in 215 games, and in 1991 he became the first, and only, Marseille player to win the Balon d'Or.

Other notable players of that era include current France manager Didier Deschamp and ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez. In more recent years the club have had stars such as Didier Drogba. Although the Ivorian spent just one season at the club both fans and player have a mutual love for one another. Franck Ribery was also at the Stade Velodrome before moving to Bayern Munich.

Marseille compete in Le Classique against Paris Saint-Germain. Like most major rivalries the antipathy doesn't remain on the pitch, with many in the North and South of France disliking each other. The South, championed by Marseille, dislike the exertive influence of the Parisian North, while many in the North are perceived to view their Southern counterparts with an air of disdain.

There have been 69 league meetings between the two clubs. Marseille have 31 victories and PSG 21. In all competitions they have faced off 83 times, of which Marseille have won 32 and PSG 31.
