Tuesday 28 April - Mourinho back to Bernabeu bombshell is 1/3 on Betfair

Jose Mourinho is the 1/31.33 favourite to become Real Madrid's next permanent manager after reports the Portuguese is club president Florentino Perez's top target.

The Benfica manager looked unlikely to land another job in one of Europe's big leagues after returning to his home country for his current role. He previously managed Fenerbahce in Turkey.

But extrordinary reports today said Perez was keen to bring back the man who managed Madrid from 2010-13 . This comes just two months after Mourinho defended a Benfica player who was accused of racially abusing Madrid star Vinicius Jr when the teams met in the Champions League.

Madrid sacked Xabi Alonso earlier this season and, under caretaker Alvaro Arbeloa, they are out of the Champions League and set for a disappointing end to 2025/26. It will be their second season in a row without major silverware.

Arbeloa is 17/29.50 to get the job while ex-Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino comes next in the market at 10/111.00.

Mourinho, then, is the firm favourite and looks set for another crack about European football's biggest job.

Thursday 29 January - Emery shock new favourite after price slash

Unai Emery is the shock new favourite to become the next Real Madrid manager after a dramatic move on the Betfair Sportsbook saw his odds cut from 16/117.00 to 2/13.00.

The Spaniard has impressed at Aston Villa, transforming the West Midlands club from relegation candidates to Premier League title challengers.

He previously managed Villarreal and Sevilla in Spain, as well as stints at Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, and the lure of taking over at one of Europe's biggest clubs may prove hard to resist.

For Villa, speculation about Emery's future will be an unwelcome distraction. They are 16/117.00 in the title winner betting but sit just four points off leaders Arsenal and level on points with second-placed Manchester City. The Villans are 8/111.73 in the Premier League Winner Without Arsenal and Man City betting.

Real Madrid are searching for a manager to be the permanent successor to Xabi Alonso who was sacked earlier this month. Alvaro Abeloa is in charge until the end of the season and is 11/43.75 to get the job permanently.

The former-Liverpool defender, however, oversaw last night's defeat to Jose Mourinho's Benfica which meant Madrid were denied qualification for the Champions League knockout stages and will have to reach the last-16 via a play-off.

Other contenders, according to the market on the next Bernabeu boss, include Jurgen Klopp 7/24.50 who has not worked in management since leaving Liverpool in 2024.

Zinedine Zidane, who won three consecutive Champions League titles in his first stint as manager, is 6/17.00 to return for a third crack at the high-pressure job.

England's Thomas Tuchel is 8/19.00 if he wants to return to club football after this summer's World Cup.

Today's move on Emery, however, means that all the market momentum is with the Villa boss.
