Malaga CF are a professional football team in Spain who play in the top flight of their country.

They were formed in 1904 and play their home games at La Rosaleda, which has the capacity to hold 30,044 supporters. Their nickname is Los Boquerones, which translates to the Anchovies in English.
The Spanish club took part in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2012, while they have had success in Europe, winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2002.
Malaga's history dates back to 1904 when they were known as Malaga Foot-Ball Club. They then changed their name a number of times throughout the 20th century until they settled on Malaga CF in 1994 after a number of years of going through financial difficulties.
In the early 2000s, the Spanish club were establishing themselves as a regular team in the Primera Division. Their reward for this came in 2002 as they qualified for the Intertoto Cup. There were wins over Gent, Willem II and Villarreal CF on the way to that tournament success.
They then took part in the UEFA Cup with a run all the way to the quarter-final, which not many people expected. Victories against Zeljeznicar Sarajevo, Amica Wronki, Leeds United and Amica Wronki put them into the last eight of the European competition. Their next test was a tie against Boavista. After 90 minutes of normal time and an additional 30 minutes of extra-time, the two sides were still level. Unfortunately for Malaga they lost the following penalty shoot-out against the Portuguese side, which put them out of the tournament.
Despite a couple of 10th placed finishes in La Liga between 2004 and 2006, the Spanish club went through some financial difficulties once again. This affected their performance on the field during the 2005-2006 campaign and resulted in them finishing bottom of the table and dropping into the Segunda Division.
They were able to get promoted back up the top flight in 2008 as they finished runners-up in the standings to earn a spot in the Primera Division.
An important turning point in the club's history came in 2010 when they were invested in by sheikh Abdullah ben Nasser Al Thani from Qatar. He became their owner on June 11, 2010 and then president on July 28 of that year.
Chilean Manuel Pellegrini took over as head coach in November and he helped to consolidate Malaga into mid-table during that season. In his next campaign they showed a huge improvement under his reigns and finished a club record fourth in the division.
Pelligrinin left in the summer of 2013 to join Manchester City and he was replaced by Bernd Schuster.
