Football League Two is the third-highest division of the Football League and fourth-highest division overall in the English football league system. Previously known as the Football League Division 3, Football League Two was first introduced at the start of the 2004/2005 season.

There are 24 clubs in Football League Two. Each club plays each of the other 23 clubs twice, once at home, once away, with three points awarded to the winning team, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. These points count towards each team's place in the league table, ultimately deciding whether a team is promoted into League One or relegated into the Conference.
The top three teams at the end of the season achieve promotion into the Football League One, as well as one of the four teams finishing from 4th- 7th competing in the League Two play-offs. The bottom four teams in Football League One are relegated into League Two, with the bottom two teams in League Two slipping out of the Football League and into the Conference National. The winner of the Conference is promoted into League Two, alongside one of the four teams that finish 2nd-5th after a play-off.
Relegation can, in rare cases, be avoided if the promoted team doesn't have a ground suitable for League football, although at the moment this isn't a factor because every team currently in the Conference National has a ground that meets the League criteria and are therefore all capable of playing league football.
Final League position is first determined by the amount of points won throughout the season, then by goal difference, goals scored and, in extreme cases, by the results between two or more teams ranked using the previous three factors and finally a series of one or more play-off matches.
Gillingham are the most recent League Two champions, winning the title in the 2012/2013 season and achieving promotion to League One alongside runners-up Rotherham and third placed Port Vale, as well as play-off winners Bradford, who won the play-off Final at Wembley in the same season they also reached the League Cup Final.
Scunthorpe, Bury, Hartlepool and Portsmouth were relegated into League Two at the end of the 2012/2013 season, while Barnet and Aldershot were the unfortunate clubs who slipped out of the league following relegation from League Two, being replaced by Conference champions Mansfield Town and play-off winners Newport County.
