Javier Hernandez

Javier Hernandez Balcazar was born in Guadalajara, Mexico on the 1st June 1988. He was the son of former Mexico international Javier Hernandez or Chicharo (pea), and as a result Hernandez was given the nickname Chicharito (little pea).

The youngster joined local side C.D. Guadalajara at the age of nine and signed his first professional contract with the club aged 15, proving his father wrong; his father had previously thought he was not good enough to make it as a footballer.

He made his debut for the club in 2006 aged 18, and went on to make seven appearances in the 2006-2007 season, managing to score one goal. In the 2007-2008 season, he made six appearances for the club but couldn't add to his solitary goal, and he struggled again in the 2008-2009 season, managing just four goals in 22 appearances.

However, he excelled in the 2009-2010 season, scoring 21 goals in 28 games, and during this spell he caught the eye of several Manchester United scouts, who decided to swoop for him before the impending World Cup, the Premier League club signing him for £6million in April 2010.

Chicharito arrived in Manchester for the start of the 2010-2011 season. He marked his debut with a goal against Chelsea in the Community Shield. His first campaign with United was ultimately successful; he scored 20 goals in 45 overall appearances, making him the first Manchester United player since Ruud van Nistelrooy (2001-2002) to score 20 goals in their debut season. He finished the season as the club's Player of the Year and also collected a Premier League medal.

In his second season he was hampered by injuries but still managed to score 10 league goals in 28 games. However, United missed out on the title to neighbours Manchester City.

Following the arrival of Robin van Persie at the start of the 2012-2013 season, Hernandez saw his role marginalised, sporadically starting but used more as an impact sub. He made 36 appearances in total and scored 18 goals. He also won his second Premier League medal.

For his country, the striker has been prolific. He impressed many in the 2010 World Cup with the goals he scored against France and Argentina. He then fired Mexico to victory in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, finishing top scorer with seven goals. He was justifiably named player of the tournament, and finished 2011 with 12 international goals in 13 appearances. In total for Mexico, he has won 57 caps and has scored 35 goals.
