Ipswich Town were founded in 1878 but the club didn't turn professional until 1936. They were chosen to enter the football league in 1938. The club play at the 30,311-seater Portman Road, which has been their home since 1884.

The two most successful England managers were poached from Ipswich Town. Unsurprisingly, both of these managers were Ipswich's most successful managers. World Cup winning manager Alf Ramsey managed the club between 1955 and 1963, and during his tenure he led the club to their sole First Division title. In 1969 Bobby Robson was appointed, and in 1978 he won Ipswich's maiden FA Cup via a single Roger Osborne goal.
More extraordinary was the UEFA Cup win in 1981 when they triumphed 5-4 over Dutch side AZ. Robson took over the reigns as England manager in 1982. Although not a Cup honour, the Ipswich side of the 1980s even managed to feature in the Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone film Escape to Victory.
George Burley also deserves a credit. He led Ipswich to the Premier League in the 1999 2000 season, and in the subsequent 2000-2001 season his side stormed the league, ultimately finishing fifth and just three points off a Champions League place. Ipswich were relegated the next season, though, and are currently the longest-serving club in the Championship, having been in the league since the 2002-2003 season.
Despite investment from Chairman Marcus Evans, the club haven't managed even to make the play-offs since the 2004-2005 season.
Full-back Mick Mills was a member of the victorious FA Cup and UEFA Cup squad, and in total he played in a record 588 league games for Town. Ray Crawford is the club's record goalscorer with 204 goals, and other notable strikers include Alan Brazil, who scored 70 goals for the club, and Darren Bent, who is a product of the youth academy.
Ipswich also became the first club ever to play a Soviet player when they signed Sergei Baltacha from Dynamo Kiev in 1988. At £4.8million Matteo Sereni is the club's record signing, but sadly the goalkeeper didn't live up to his billing and only made 25 appearances.
Due to Ipswich being the only club in Suffolk, their nearest rivals are Norfolk-based Norwich. Due to the animosity between the counties, let alone the clubs, the rivalry is one of the most intense in Britain. The two clubs have faced off 138 times, Ipswich having won 59 to Norwich's 53. However, Norwich have the current bragging rights after beating Ipswich 4-1 and 5-1 in their previous two encounters.
