The FIFA Club World Cup is an annual competition run by FIFA which is open to the winners of the AFC Champions League (Asia), CAF Champions League (Africa), CONCAF Champions League (North America), Copa Libertadores (South America), OFC Champions League (Oceania), UEFA Champions League (Europe) and national champions of the host nation.

The tournament took place for the first time in 2000 in Brazil. It was won by Corinthians as they beat Vasco da Gama in the final on penalties after a goalless draw. In the third place play-off that year, Necaxa also defeated Real Madrid in a shoot-out.
From 2001 through to 2004 there was no event held, but it returned in Japan in 2005. Sao Paulo overcame Liverpool 1-0 to lift the trophy, while Saprissa beat Ittihad for third place.
Internacional continued South America's grip on the trophy as they beat Barcelona in 2006. The Copa Libertadores winners edged the Champions League holders 1-0 in Japan.
The first ever European team to win the FIFA Club World Cup were AC Milan in 2007. The Italians had defeated Liverpool in the Champions League final earlier in the year. They beat Boca Juniors 4-2 in the highest scoring final in the history of the World Cup competition.
Manchester United followed in Milan's footsteps the subsequent year. After beating domestic rivals Chelsea in the Champions League, they gained a spot in Japan. They were able to edge out LDU Quito of Ecuador 1-0.
Inter Milan and Barcelona kept Europe's great run going with victories in the next two tournaments. It was the inaugural winners Corinthians who broke their stronghold on the trophy in 2010. They beat Chelsea 1-0 in the final to do so.
Bayern Munich made it six wins from 10 for the Europeans in the 2013 event held in Morocco. In the final they faced home favourites Raja Casablanca and came out on top 2-0.
At the end of every FIFA Club World Cup, a number of awards are handed out. The Golden Ball is given to the player who is voted the most impressive from the campaign.
There is also the Golden Shoe trophy, handed to the top goalscorer. Denilson has the record for the highest total in history as he scored on four occasions in 2009. Other winners of the award include Lionel Messi, Nicolas Anelka and Wayne Rooney.
