Euro 2012 Results: Rooney goal sets up Italian job for England

Wayne Rooney scored on his return from suspension as England beat Ukraine 1-0 to set up a Euro 2012 quarter-final against Italy.

Roy Hodgson's men were matched at 7.413/2 to win Group D which they did thanks to their win and a shock in tonight's other match as Sweden beat France 2-0. Laurent Blanc's team qualify for the knockout stages as runners-up.

England were matched at 3.3512/5 for a victory that they fought hard to achieve. They got lucky when Ukraine had a goal disallowed, with John Terry wrongly judged to have prevented Marko Devic's shot from crossing the line. Replays showed that the whole ball had gone over and, whether or not the football gods were compensating the Three Lions for Frank Lampard's disallowed strike at the last World Cup, the incident reignites the debate about goal-line technology.

In the first-half, Rooney looked rusty, struggling to control the ball and glancing a header wide after Steven Gerrard found him unmarked in the Ukraine box. The England captain's crosses have been a route to success so far and Andrei Pyatov looked uncertain every time one was swung in. Early in the second-half, Gerrard played a teasing ball in, Pyatov flapped and Rooney headed in England's winner.

Nobody in the English camp was getting carried away at the final whistle - they are, whisper it, 10.519/2 to win the tournament - and they know they will need to improve if they are to come through Sunday's quarter-final against Italy.

France now face the unenviable task of playing Spain in the last eight. Les Bleus were left stunned by spirited Sweden tonight. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored one of the goals of the tournament to volley his team ahead in the second-half and Sebastian Larsson made sure when he bagged the second.

The Swedes, who had already been eliminated following their defeat to England, touched 7.613/2 for their win. France are out to 13.525/2 in the outright winner market.
