They were founded in 1879 and play their home games at the Keepmoat Stadium, which holds 15,231 fans.

After six years as an amateur club, they turned professional in 1885. They first entered the FA Cup in the 1888-1889 season, famously losing their opening game 9-1 to Rotherham Town.

In their early years as a professional club, they played in a number of local leagues, including the Midland Alliance League and Midland League.

In 1901 they were elected into the Football League to replace New Brighton Tower. They made a successful start as they finished second that year in the Second Division. However, in their following campaign, they ended in the bottom three and were voted out in favour of Bradford City.

Following another short spell in the Football League, they lost their place again and by the time 1914 came around, they found themselves in some financial difficulties. That led to liquidation and a new club subsequently followed on the back of this.

The new Doncaster side had to wait until 1923 to gain entry back into the Football League when they were placed in the Division Three North at the expense of Stalybridge Celtic. At this stage they were playing their home games at Belle Vue, which became their home until 2006 before moving to their current stadium, the Keepmoat.

Rovers were able to keep hold of their league status until 1999 when they dropped into the Conference. In 2003 they gained promotion via the play-offs, which gave them the momentum needed to go up again into the third tier of English football. Their second successive promotion was secured as they were champions of the Third Division. That was the third time they had won that league after doing so in 1966 and 1969.

Doncaster's first major trophy win came in 2007 when they successfully landed the Football League Trophy at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. They went all the way to extra-time against Bristol Rovers after both sides were locked at 2-2 at full-time. Their captain Graeme Lee headed home the winner before lifting the trophy in front of 59,000 fans.

The Yorkshire club won promotion back into the second tier, now known as the Championship, following a dramatic end to their 2012-2013 campaign. It went all the way down to the final game of the season against Brentford in a winner takes all fixture. James Coppinger's goal, scored with seconds remaining, was enough to separate the two teams.
