Derby County were one of the twelve founding members of the Football League in 1888, and remain one of only ten clubs to have competed in every season of the football league since. Nicknamed The Rams, a tribute to the club's ties to the First Regiment of the Derby Militia, Derby have played their home games at Pride Park since 1997 following a 102-year residency at previous home the Baseball Ground.

The club have spent all but four seasons in the top two divisions of the English football league, although it has been nearly 40 years since the club last won the top division title. During the 1970s, the Rams won the Division One title and also competed in Europe over the course of four seasons, reaching the European Cup semi-finals in 1973 under manager Brian Clough before being controversially beaten by Juventus, in a game that saw the match officials accused of having been bribed by the Italian side ahead of the bitter tie.
While Derby have been long-time rivals of neighbours Nottingham Forest, that rivalry deepened in the 1970s due to former Derby manager Brian Clough taking the manager job at Forest following his ill-fated spell at Leeds United.
The club's sole FA Cup triumph came back in 1946, when goals from Peter Doherty, a brace from Jackie Stamps, and an own goal saw the Rams secure a 4-1 victory over Charlton Athletic. Since then, the club has not managed to reach an FA Cup final.
The Rams' last appearance in the top-flight was a short-lived one. Following their promotion back into the top-flight in 2007, the club recorded the league's lowest points total since the introduction of three points for a win, finishing with just 11 points and also breaking the unwanted record for the fewest wins in a Premier League season, with just one victory in 38 games during a dismal campaign under Billy Davies and then Paul Jewell.
While Nigel Clough brought stability to the club during his four year tenure, Derby made the decision to replace the manager with former England head coach Steve McClaren, who has now been tasked with leading the Rams back into the big time and achieving promotion to the Premier League. With young stars such as Will Hughes and Mason Bennett coming through the ranks, the future looks extremely bright for Derby County fans.
