The Spaniard opted to move to England when he was 16 in order to progress his career.  Opportunities were limited at the Catalonia club, so he felt forced to seek first team football elsewhere. He earned a major breakthrough at Arsenal under manager Arsene Wenger in 2003.

His debut came in a League Cup tie against Rotherham just a month after joining the Gunners. At the age of 16 years and 177 days he was the youngest player ever to feature for the club. His first goal for the club came later in that competition in their tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After gaining more and more experience in England, Fabregas eventually became a regular starter in the Arsenal first team. In 2005 he won the FA Cup when the North London club beat Manchester United on penalties at the Millennium Stadium. A year later he came up against his boyhood club Barcelona in the Champions League final at the Stade de France in Paris. Despite taking the lead, Arsenal were beaten 2-1 as the Spanish club scored two late goals to deny them their first ever success in the tournament.

In 2008, Wenger made Fabregas his club captain when he replaced William Gallas in the role. The Frenchman was confident his talented midfielder could handle the responsibility and lead by example.

After nine years in England, the Spain international moved back to Barcelona in 2011 as Arsenal had a bid accepted which was thought to be in the region of £35million. Since rejoining he has won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Supercopa de Espana twice, and the FIFA Club World Cup in a successful spell.

Fabregas has represented Spain at every level from under-16s onwards. If selected to take part in Brazil in 2014, it will be his fifth consecutive major tournament and also his third appearance at a World Cup. He will be bidding for another medal after success at Euro 2008, the World Cup in 2010, and in Euro 2012.
