The club play their home games at Ashton Gate, located in the southwest of the city. The club's nickname is "The Robins", and a robin featured on the club's badge from 1976 to 1994, with the team's home colours famously being red.

Formed in 1897, the club achieved their highest league finish back in 1907, finishing runners-up in Football League Division One. In 1909 they lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United, their first and only appearance in a final. Relegation from the top division in 1909 followed, however, with the club only returning to the top division between 1976 and 1980 before slipping down the leagues again.

In 1982, Bristol City had the unwanted honour of becoming the first English club to suffer three consecutive relegations, culminating in the club going bankrupt in 1990 after finding themselves stuck in the bottom division. The seasons between 1999 and 2006 were spent challenging for promotion in the upper half of the Football League Second Division, until the club managed to establish themselves in the second tier after promotion in 2006-2007, spending the next six seasons in the Championship.

City followed up promotion to the Football League Championship in the 2006-2007 season by reaching the play-off final after their first season back in the division, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League after they were defeated by Hull City 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

After Gary Johnson ended his five-year tenure as City manager in 2010, the club began to struggle in the league despite spending significant funds in the search of promotion. Relegation back to League One followed at the end of the 2012-2013 season, following a three-year spell in which the club went through five managers, with Steve Cotterill the sixth man to take charge of the club since Johnson's departure.

Even though Bristol City are the most successful club in Bristol, the city is the largest metro area in England never to have had a club win the English top flight. The Robins' main rivals have long been city neighbours Bristol Rovers. City have won 43 of the 105 games between the two Bristol clubs, but the two sides haven't played in the same league since the 2000-2001 season.
