Blackpool

Blackpool were founded in 1887 and in 1896 they joined the Football League. The club have played at Bloomfield Road for over 100 years after becoming permanent tenants at the 17,338-capacity stadium in 1901. Following their promotion to the Premier League in 2010, they became the first club in English football to have won promotion from every division via the play-offs.

The club's crowning moment was their 1953 FA Cup win over Bolton. Many people know it as the "Matthews Final". The Seasiders were making their third FA Cup final appearance in six years, but found themselves 3-1 down with 25 minutes left on the clock. A Stanley Matthews cross found Stan Mortensen, who grabbed a goal back to make it 3-2 in the 68th minute. Mortensen then scored directly from a free kick in the 89th minute to draw the match level, before another Matthews cross found Bill Perry, who scored the winner in the 92nd minute, sending the fans into a state of delirium. To date this is Blackpool's only major piece of silverware.

Jimmy Armfield quite simply is Blackpool. The right-back, who won a World Cup medal with England in 1966, spent his entire career with the Tangerines, racking up a record 569 league appearances between 1954 and 1971. Jimmy Hampson's 252 goals for the club is also a record, whilst the duo of Mortensen and Matthews are held in the highest of regard following their FA Cup success. Other England internationals to have come through at the club include the late Alan Ball and Trevor Sinclair.

In the modern era, there has been Charlie Adam, who captained the club to promotion into the Premier League, securing their return after a 39-year absence. Meanwhile, journeyman striker Brett Ormerod is the only player to have scored in all four English divisions for Blackpool. The current star is the diminutive Tom Ince, son of manager Paul Ince.

The Tangerines compete in the West Lancashire derby with Preston. The first meeting between the two sides took place on the 23rd November 1901, and Preston won 4-1. The rivalry heightened in the 50s as Blackpool fans argued that Matthews was the best player, while Preston fans believed their Tom Finney was the greatest player in England. To date the sides have met each other 86 times in the league, Blackpool having won 30 of the meetings, with Preston winning 38.

The derby is also one of the few in English football to have been contested in every division.
