Barnsley are a Championship club, formed in 1887, joining the Football League in 1898. The club are based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, playing their home games at Oakwell. Nicknamed the Tykes, Barnsley hold the record as the English club which has spent the most seasons playing in the second tier, with 76.

After a tough start to their professional career, Barnsley enjoyed some real success in 1910 when the club reached the FA Cup final, eventually losing to Newcastle in a replay match. The Tykes went one better two years later, though, beating West Brom 1-0 in the 1912 FA Cup Final replay, winning the tournament for the first and only time in their history.
Following a gloomy couple of decades in which they slipped to the bottom of the Football League, Barnsley starting climbing the leagues during the 1990s, finally reaching the top tier of the Football League the first time in 1997. With Danny Wilson as manager, the club made it to the top flight after finishing runner-up in Division One and achieving automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Their time at the top table was short-lived, however, suffering relegation at the end of their first season in the Premier League despite spending big money to sign the likes of Ǵorǵi Hristov, Jan Åge Fjørtoft and Ashley Ward in a bid to survive the drop. Relegation meant the club joined a list of clubs who have only completed one season in the top flight, with Glossop, Leyton Orient, Northampton Town, Carlisle United and Swindon Town also achieving the feat during the history of the Football League.
Relegation to Division Two and administration followed in the intervening years, both casting the club's future in serious doubt. A late purchase by Barnsley's then Mayor, Peter Doyle, saved the club from the brink of folding in 2002, since when Gordon Shepherd and local businessman Patrick Cryne have been in charge of the club, overseeing the club's return to the Championship in 2006.
While there have been no fewer than five different managers since their return to the second tier, the club have managed to retain their Championship status since 2006 despite being involved in an almost annual relegation battle.
On 3rd January 2011 Barnsley became the first club to achieve 1,000 wins in the second level of English football following a 2-1 home victory against Coventry City. Barnsley are also the first club to rack up 3,000 games in the second tier of league football.
