Angel di Maria was born on the 14th February 1988 in Rosario, Argentina. He came through the ranks at Rosaria Central, making his debut in 2005. In January 2007, he came close to signing with Russian side Ruban Kazan. He initially accepted a deal but then performed a U-turn and turned them down. However, after a brilliant performance at the 2007 U-20 World Cup, he caught the attention of Benfica, who signed him for €8million.

Signed by Benfica as a replacement for the outgoing Simao, the youngster did not disappoint. In his debut season, 2007-2008, he helped the club finish fourth, just missing out on the Champions League. In the 2008-2009 season he helped Benfica finish third and was dubbed by Maradona as Argentina's "next superstar". His final season at Benfica was his most fruitful as he helped the club win the league with five goals and 12 assists. He also won his second Portuguese League Cup.
On the 28th June 2010, he became the newest addition to the revamped Real Madrid Galacticos, after being signed for €25million, with a further €11million in incentives. In his first season at the club he further established himself as a sensational talent with six goals and 11 assists in 35 games, helping Madrid finish second and helping the side lift the Copa del Rey. The 2011-2012 season was di Maria's greatest to date. He helped Madrid recapture La Liga; in just 23 league games he scored five goals and provided 15 assists, form that saw him keep Kaka out of the side. The 2012-2013 campaign saw Madrid lose their title to Barcelona but it also saw di Maria score seven goals, his biggest goal haul in a season. He also weighed in with seven assists.
As a youth with the Argentine national side he won the 2007 Youth World Cup, in which he scored three goals. He also won an Olympic Gold Medal in 2008, thanks to his winner against Nigeria in the final. The winger was given his first senior cap in a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on the 6th September 2009. He was also included in the squad for the 2010 World Cup. He scored his first international goal against Catalonia in a friendly on the 22nd of December 2009. To date di Maria has made 43 appearances for Argentina, scoring nine goals.
