There's plenty to discuss ahead of day two in the women's singles at the US Open, with the bottom half of the draw in action on Tuesday. Dan Weston returns with his thoughts...

Big names progress in early day one matches

Garcia the lean on day two

Alexandrova versus Fernandez the match of the day
Swiatek shows the way in early demolition
Winners in the early round one matches in New York included Belinda Bencic, Victoria Azarenka, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Elena Rybakina and the tournament favourite Iga Swiatek. The Pole dropped just one game en route to defeating Rebecca Peterson, showing a statement of intent to the field. The likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Ons Jabeur, Elina Svitolina and Marketa Vondrousova are all strong favourites to progress on Tuesday, and to reply to that statement from Swiatek.
Garcia a big step up for Wang
Last season's WTA Finals winner Caroline Garcia isn't among those strong favourites though, having had a tough year so far, failing to win a title and being beaten by Lin Zhu in Cleveland last week. Despite that loss, there's always reasoning that a quarter-final spot the week before a Grand Slam isn't a disaster (avoiding overplaying) but Garcia's lack of wins in recent months is a concern.
The market has certainly taken that into account, with the Frenchwoman trading at 1.804/5 at the time of writing, against qualifier Yafan Wang. A lack of recent wins certainly can't be attributed to Wang, who won the Stanford Challenger recently, albeit against a mediocre field, and qualified to be her - again facing fairly limited opposition. However, Garcia will be a significant step up and a big test for Wang.
Alexandrova could be value against Fernandez
Another match which fascinates, and arguably the match of the day, is Ekaterina Alexandrova versus Leylah Fernandez, with the market finding it difficult to split the duo. The 2021 runner-up here, Fernandez, has a very marginal edge in the market as favourite, priced up at 1.9420/21, but Alexandrova has the better hard court data this year.
Depending on which way you view it, though, Alexandrova's final last week in Cleveland is either a good thing (form) or a bad thing (fatigue). It's up to you to pick which - if you think it's a good thing, the odds-against looks generous.
Kenin and Bogdan both with fitness doubts
Moving on, it seems so long ago that Sofia Kenin was a Grand Slam winner and runner-up in the same season, but it was just three years ago. Now, the American hasn't played since Wimbledon and is ranked around the top 100, a far cry from her career-best of four in the world.
Kenin is 1.684/6 to get past Ana Bogdan, who has lost her last three with the first of those via retirement in Lausanne, so both players have something to prove from a fitness perspective - a scenario which often makes predicting round one matches in a Grand Slam so difficult.
There are also some Brits in action on day two, with Katie Boulter a solid favourite for her match with Diane Parry, and Jodie Burrage a slight underdog for her clash with Anna Blinkova, who has lost five of her last six. So, both Brits have a chance on Tuesday to keep further national interest in the tournament after Lily Miyazaki's win on Monday afternoon.
