The Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals take place on Friday, and after top seed and tournament favourite Novak Djokovic was ousted yesterday, Dan Weston returns to preview the day ahead...

  • Musetti stuns Djokovic as Rublev helps us pick a winner

  • Rublev should end Struff's journey

  • Rune slight favourite over Medvedev

Djokovic loss wreaks havoc on the outright market

In yesterday's preview, I mentioned that Lorenzo Musetti was in superb form so far in the event, winning three of four sets by bagel scorelines prior to his last 16 clash with Novak Djokovic. No bagels ensued, but the Italian did break the world number one eight times to stun him in a three-set, three-hour epic.

With Djokovic dumped out, the outright market has turned on its head. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner are vying for overall favourite status at 3.711/4 and 3.814/5, respectively. Andrey Rublev, Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune aren't far behind that duo either, in what looks to now be a really competitive event.

As for Rublev, he picked up a victory for us against Karen Khachanov, while Daniil Medvedev saved two match points on the way to eventually getting past Alexander Zverev, 9-7 in the final set tiebreak in another match lasting around the three-hour mark.

Rublev should oust qualifier Struff

In the quarter-finals, all of Tsitsipas, Sinner and Rublev are solid pre-match favourites at around the 1.42/5 to 1.51/2 price range, and I'd be surprised if qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff's journey here continued at the hands of Rublev.

Struff has picked up a lot of wins lately, but most were either in qualifying or Challengers, although he has to be respected after shocking both Alex De Minaur and Casper Ruud in previous rounds.

The German actually beat Rublev last time they met at the French Open two years ago (five sets) when Rublev was priced around the 1.152/13 mark pre-match, a rather shorter line than today.

Sinner and Tsitsipas solid favourites to progress

Sinner faces fellow Italian Musetti, who will be keen to back up a career-best victory yesterday with another strong performance against his countryman.

However, Sinner is rapidly improving on all surfaces and looks a really strong contender for the title following Djokovic's exit, and he has an edge on both serve and return data on clay over Musetti, making him a justified solid favourite to take this.

As for Tsitsipas, he faces a more serve-oriented match-up against Taylor Fritz, who is another player on a solid upward curve.

However, on clay, the American has struggled on his serve in the last year or two, which again makes the market about right for these trio of solid favourites - Tsitsipas' price looks about right to me.

Fatigue and conditions create doubts over Medvedev

This leaves one remaining quarter-final, which looks much more competitive, between Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune.

Early prices have Rune as the slight favourite at 1.84/5, and in terms of fatigue, there is no comparison, with Medvedev coming off that long win over Zverev, and Rune benefiting from a walkover given by Matteo Berrettini.

Throw in Rune's preference for these slow conditions - Medvedev notoriously hates them - and the market looks about right here.

Medvedev's two year clay data isn't actually that bad given his clay-hating reputation (around 106% combined service/return points won) and if he's in decent physical shape, should be competitive here. To me, this looks like the most fascinating match-up of the Friday schedule.
