General Election Date: October 50/50 after Hunt's hint

An October general election shortened to around 2.01/1 on the Betfair Exchange after the chancellor Jeremy Hunt hinted that Britain could go to the polls then.

There will be an election later this year and, after Rishi Sunak last week ruled out a May vote, Hunt fuelled speculation that October would be the chosen month.

Did Hunt accidentally let slip election date?

Hunt told a Lords Committee that the government's next spending review had to be completed before next April and "if the general election is in October that will mean it's very, very tight."

Earlier this year, Sunak said he was working on the basis that there would be an election in "the second half of this year."

An election in the period October to December is 1.241/4 on the Betfair Exchange after the prime minister last week ruled out holding it on 2 May.

This followed reports that Sunak could try to see off a plot by some of his MPs to remove him by calling a general election.

Labour to return to power amid Tory massacre

A Labour majority 1.192/11 is the clear favourite on the Betfair Exchange whenever the election takes place.

The Conservatives are 1.625/8 to lose over 200 seats in one what would count as an electoral massacre for the Tories.

It is a far cry from 2019 when Boris Johnson lead them to an 80-seat majority.

Despite their dire polling and odds, Sunak is 1.251/4 to be Conservative leader at the next election.
