Royal Ascot Tips for Today: Over to Appleby mark two for each-way double and treble

Charlie Appleby and Godolphin
Can Charlie Appleby find his first winner of this year's Royal meeting today?

Alan Dudman found a winning each-way double yesterday from his three selections and he has three more for Thursday at Royal Ascot...

  • Two of Alan's three yesterday were placed

  • Godolphin pair drifting to decent prices

  • A Day 3 double and treble to consider

Royal Ascot - 15:05 - Back Tagabawa

The each-way part of yesterday's 69/170.00 double was landed thanks to Saint George and Tarrabb, although Saint George's 1.251/4 defeat in-running was a tough one to take against that pesky Frankie Dettori.

I'm going against the form grain somewhat here with Charlie Appleby (who hasn't won a race yet at the meeting), but Tagabawa looks a serious proposition in the 15:05 Royal Ascot King George V Stakes over 1m4f.

The stable won the race 12 months ago with Secret State, and also Space Age in 2015. Both came out of lesser wins at small tracks (Secret State won at Beverley), and the selection Tagabawa relished the step up to 1m4f for his handicap debut in April at Kempton.

It may have only been a small field, but he won that from 85 with a ton in hand - quickening up well inside the final 2f and clocking a closing sectional of 11.01 seconds. Quick for a stayer.

He fits the bill with Appleby's previous profiles of winners - quite late maturing types for a trip and he fully deserves his 12lb rise as he looked smart.

It will be interesting to see how he handles quicker ground considering all three starts have been on the AW, but is dam his by Nayef - and anything with Nayef in the family is made for good to firm.

Related to Turgenev too, with that name for the latter he should love a duel at the end.

Royal Ascot - 15:40 - Back Warm Heart

Looking at the betting with Al Asifah in the Ribblesdale, this could be something of a lap of honour considering the second favourite Bluestocking is 9/25.50.

This looks a race to use for the multiple each-way, and I wasn't surprised to see the 10s gone on Warm Heart for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore this morning.

She beat Bluestocking at Newbury last time, yet is double the price today at 8/19.00. She'll stay 1m4f no problem and the better ground suited her last time.

She may only be rated 95, but I've often said in my column that 3yo fillies can take huge jumps at this stage of the season, and O'Brien in particular has a habit of improving them rapidly.

Moore in his column has said on her chances: "I certainly don't think we have seen the best of Warm Heart yet and hopefully the Galileo influence will see the Newbury winner staying this 1m4f trip. She did really well to beat Bluestocking there and the third has since won a Listed race at Longchamp."

Ascot - 17:35 - Back Bold Act

The London Gold Cup form is to the fore here with the second (Exoplanet) and Bold Act (third at Newbury) doing battle again. The winner that day Bertinelli runs in the King George V at 15:05.

Bold Act had a fair bit to do and the pace wasn't particularly searching and his position wasn't ideal in the face of a lack of gallop.

That was his first try at 1m2f, and I think he'll get further in time. Ignore his effort and defeat at Newmarket in April as the ground was a nonsense at that meeting.

He looked a good 2yo on fast ground and looked a 1m4f horse too - and a well run 1m2f will suit him.

A drifter in the betting to 11/112.00, I don't mind at all with the four places.
