The Betfair Sportsbook is paying extra places today!

Plenty of runners for Day 3 at Royal Ascot, and four Extra Place Specials on the Sportsbook.

The 15:05 Royal Ascot King George V Stakes 1m4f has 20 runners and five places on offer.

Charlie Appleby won the race last year with Secret State - and his Tagabawa was the market leader this morning, although hit 5/16.00 from 4/15.00. He bolted up by 4L at Kempton and has gone up 12lb.

The Gosdens' Burglar is a horse I have time for, while raw, and a Redcar winner, his opening handicap mark is 92 and Gosden had his Royal Ascot dice yesterday with two winners.

The 16:20 2m4f Ascot Gold Cup has 14 runners and four places on offer on the Sportsbook if you are going each-way, and this looks a race that could give us the possibility of something popping up at a big price as the staying division doesn't look the strongest.

On the plus side, it's open without a Stradivarius, and Courage Mon Ami goes for Gosden and Frankie Dettori. Emily Dickinson has always looked a thorough stayer, but she has been weak this morning on the Sportsbook from 5/16.00 to 13/27.50.

Courage Mon Ami has been boosted on the Sportsbook to win from 5/16.00 to a very decent 8/19.00.

The 17:35 Royal Ascot Hampton Court Stakes 1m2f has 16 runners and is another Extra Place Special. Bold Act was a drifter early this morning from 15/28.50 out to 17/29.50, although the big positive in terms of the betting to report is Walpiro for Ed Walker.

Walpiro was cut from 16s to 9/110.00 and Roger Teal's Dancing Magic a 66/167.00 into 22/123.00 mover.

Five places also for the closing 18:10 Royal Ascot Buckingham Palace Stakes over 7f

The OddsBoost on Unforgotten, Croupier & Biggles All To Finish In The Top 6 In The 18:10 Royal Ascot has been pushed out to 11/112.00.

Horses for courses

This section highlights horses that have won twice or more at today's tracks and could be in with a chance today.

16:20 Royal Ascot: Trueshan has won here three times [75%), and Coltrane 11/43.75 has won here twice (67%).

Form Watch

Binoculars massive 1280.jpg

Charlie Appleby's form going into Ascot was a cause for concern, and he's still without a winner at this year's meeting from his six runners thus far. Although the eagle eyed punters would have probably snapped up the two winners for the yard last night at Newcastle.

All six have been unplaced, so can he turn it around today? His chances lie with:

15:05 Royal Ascot: Tagabawa 5/16.00.
16:20 Royal Ascot: Yibir 12/113.00.
17:00 Royal Ascot: Highbank 22/123.00 and One Nation 22/123.00.
17:35 Royal Ascot: Bold Act 17/29.50.

Paddy Twomey has been a trainer who has risen sharply in recent seasons, and he's currently 3-5 at (60%) and has had nine winners from his 40 runners so far this season in Ireland.

His representative today is Noche Magica 9/110.00 in the opening 14:30 5f Norfolk Stakes.

The 2yo was a beaten 13/8F last time in the Marble Hill behind Givemethebeatboys.

Trainer William Haggas is without a winner from his four runners at the meeting so far, but did have the second in the Queen Mary. His two chances on Thursday are with Desert Hero 20/121.00 in the 15:05 King George V Stakes 1m2f and Montassib 10/111.00 in the closing 18:10.

Race of the day

Ascot blurred sprint finish 2 1280.jpg

The Ascot Gold Cup at 16:20 dominates the day for the stayers, and a Gold Cup without Stradivarius is like Norman Wisdom without his cap.

It's an open field this year with Coltrane out to enhance his Ascot record with Ascot Stakes and Sagaro Stakes wins at the track.

Andrew Balding went close with Saint George in yesterday's Queen's Vase, and he was nice and solid this morning from 10/34.33 into 11/43.75.

There's a very enticing Oddsboost on Courage Mon Ami - the Gosden/Dettori horse who has been boosted three points on the Sportsbook out to 8/19.00.

He overcame a very slow pace at Goodwood to win a handicap over 1m6f, and he's up in distance by some way and also up in class with just two novice wins to his name prior to Goodwood.

The 4yo is now rated 106 but he is a son of Frankel, and they gallop and gallop. He's a huge fella too, and it will be interesting to see how he copes with different conditions, track, distance and rivals today, but I think he'll stay.

Memories of Yeats on the honours board come flooding back with the dark blue Coolmore silks of Emily Dickinson. She is certainly worth a shot at this extreme distance, but she was well beaten in the Savil Beg last time.

It's a match-up of the super sires here. In the Gosden corner with Courage Mon Ami is the Frankel stat, and in the blue corner is Emily Dickinson representing Dubawi.

Frankel is 17% win and 33% placed over 2m4f on the Flat, while Dubawi is 0-7 but 22% placed. Do we side with Frankel?

Will Yibir stay? Well his mother Rumh did, but he has never been beyond 1m4f and he's quirky. Quick ground is a must for him.

Subjectivist won this in 2021, but he was on the sick list with injury and missed the whole of last season. Trueshan might have put up the world's best ever performance in the Northumberland Plate and at one point was the greatest racehorse in living memory and modern times, but the issue with the ground is becoming boring.

Big Race Verdict

I'd look to place lay Yibir in this, especially with the Appleby form not exactly at their usual standards. Courage Mon Ami on the price boost at 8/1 looks tempting as I think he will stay while Broome looks overpriced at 14/115.00.

Back Courage Mon Ami @ 8/19.00 boosted price

Final Word

The fortunes of one Appleby have been well highlighted today, but another one - Mick, got his first Royal Ascot winner yesterday with Big Evs' success in the Windsor Castle. All the years of toiling on the All-Weather would have meant the world to the team. Well done to Mick.

However, imagine if you'd backed the horse at Redcar! I know the feeling, I managed to find a Hewick defeat at Sedgefield before he went on his winning spree.

Back tomorrow for Day 4, good luck today. You can follow me on Twitter @DudmanAl.
