The ITV Racing cameras will be present and correct at Newmarket in the coming day to cover some of the most significant Group 1s for two-year-olds of the entire season.

The arrival of rain on Thursday morning and threat of further rain on Friday night will mean that the ground is likely to soften. It isn't all that easy to estimate just how much the ground will ease, but working on the basis of at least good-to-soft and possibly softer ground for Saturday's racing seems prudent in light of the weather forecast.

Newmarket - 14:40: Back The Very Man

From a betting perspective, the race that is likely to attract the most interest this week is the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap (14:40). With 34 declared runners and two reserves, it represents one of the fiercest challenges for bettors to work out in the entire racing calendar.

Irish trainers have enjoyed a particularly good run in the race, winning four of the last five renewals of it and finishing a close second in the other. The Irish look to have another very strong hand of runners for this year's renewal and the one that I think might be the pick of them is the Jessica Harrington-trained The Very Man.

The son of Jeremy wouldn't have a typical profile for this race as a nine-year-old. However, he has only had eight starts on the Flat and his age hasn't stopped him showing notable progression in Flat handicaps in recent starts. He was a bit unlucky not to win the Connacht Hotel Handicap at the Galway Festival, finishing a never-nearer second to the well-handicapped Teed Up.

He built on that promise when winning a competitive handicap on the Shergar Cup card at Ascot less than a fortnight later. That lined him up for a deeply-competitive renewal of the Irish Cesarewitch, but having got further back than ideal, he could finish no closer than seventh.

The Cesarewitch is a race that rewards tractability and a relaxed racing style. Getting all the way down to the two-mile two-furlong start in an energy-efficient manner is just as important as relaxing in the race itself and horses have to relax to give themselves a chance.

The Very Man is just that type of horse and will relish the extreme stamina test that this race will present on rain-softened ground. The market has been very dismissive of his chance, but I could see him run a big race at a big price.

Newmarket - 15:15: Back Gasper De Lemos

The other race of interest on the card is the Ghaiyyath Zetland Stakes (15:15) and the one I like in it is the Aidan O'Brien-trained Gasper De Lemos. The son of Justify was particularly green on his debut in a maiden over a mile at Leopardstown in August, getting badly outpaced before making late gains.

While he was dropped to seven furlongs for his next start at the Curragh, he had clearly sharpened up significantly from his debut and made much of the running on his way to recording an authoritative success.

While it was surprising to see him cope as well with the drop to seven furlongs as he did at the Curragh, the step up to this longer trip seems very likely to suit him well. The rain won't hold any fears for him either. He looks open to more improvement and looks to have a great chance.
